I am in MD and my daughter was in PA. I found her on the PA website. The experience went fairly smooth.
Just remember - in general, most of the kids on the state websites have some serious issues and the issues are not listed in the profile on the web. They usually look within the home county and then home state and after exhausting all of those options, list on the web site. So, they couldn't find a home in their own state. I know there are exceptions to this, but this is very often the case. I only say this because I know you had a placement with severe issues in the past, and I want to caution you (as a friend). |

Please research California VERY carefully. Feel free to read my old posts we just had a disrupted adoption the week of finalization and our state ICPC said this is a pretty normal thing for Cali.

I live in Tennessee and adopted an 11 year old boy from Oregon two years ago. I adopted him as a single parent, and found it to be a rather easy and pleasant experience. It was decided that Tony would be placed with me just before Thanksgiving of 2004, and I flew to Oregon to pick him up the last week of April 2005. So it took about 5 months for all of the ICPC paperwork to be completed and everything to be finalized.
During that 5 month period the state of Oregon paid to fly me out to visit him for a long weekend, and then they paid to fly Tony to visit me here in Tennessee so he would know what to expect when he moved here. And we talked on the phone a lot. I found Tony on the Idaho Wednesday's Child website and called his caseworker. We talked for about 45 minutes, and she said she realized quickly that I was the one who was supposed to be Tony's dad. The ICPC process takes some time, but I haven't regretted any part of adopting Tony. Personally I STRONGLY recommend looking at each and every state photolisting. It's a long story, but I am just now starting the process of adopting Tony's two younger brothers who are also in Oregon. They are 12 and 10, and hopefully will be here in Tennessee to start school in the fall. |

Yes, the state of Oregon paid to fly me out to spend a weekend with Tony, and also paid to fly Tony to Tennessee for a weekend visit. Then they also paid for me to fly out to move him to Tennessee. They also covered all costs for hotels and car rentals.
I'm not sure if all states cover these costs, but I would certainly ask if I were you. Sometimes the caseworkers for the kids don't know and they have to ask their supervisors, so you have to be upfront and ask them. The state of Oregon also sends me a monthly allowance for Tony which will continue until he is 18. Hope that helps. Chad |
