We wanted to adopt and did alot of research. It costs approx. $26,000 - $30,000 to adopt over seas, & it costs approx. $15,000-$18,000 to adopt here in the U.S. using a private agency. We then discovered that if we adopt through the Ma. Dept. of Social Services, it costs $0. There are pros & cons to all three types of adoption, however, after weighing: cost, medical disclosure of child and parents, after adoption support(services), we chose The Ma. D.S.S.. A little over a year ago, we started the process, and we now have a baby boy. We got him at 4 days old. We are technically his foster parents at the moment, till the adoption is finalized. Until such time, the State is PAYING US monthly, for taking care of him! There is a slight risk that the child might be returned to the mother, however we are willing to take the chance.

You have to take a 8 week course and than they will do a home study. Even under the best of circumstances, it can be rough. Bio-parents have a legal right to see their kids once a month for an hour (minimum..sometimes more frequently and for longer visits) Some parents will temporarily dust themselves off to look good and get their kids back, only to have them re-enter the system later, some parents will get court ordered cracker-jack lawyers. My first adoption was a 7 day old baby girl, whose mom ultimatly gave the child up, and the whole process took 2 yrs. 9 mmonths. My second was a 2 day old girl, who was returned to her mom at 4 1/2 months, and than came back to me at 16 months. Shes 5 1/2 now and it's still in legal limbo. My third was a 2 day old boy who had only very minimal contact with his birth mom, but she refused to terminate her rights, so the whol process took a little over 4 years. I have wonderful kids, so it's a success story, but alot of bumps along the way, so if you choose this method, go into it with your eyes wide open! Good luck

Thumbs up cost of adoption in Massachusetts

I am single 56 and am a fostermother of up to 6 severely or terminally ill children
I have adopted one, I had her since she came out of the hospital, just under 6 lbs, a preemie with several medical problems. now at 4 1/2 she is just fine and healthy. The first 2 years were hard and she has had cardiac surgery, she was a "crack" baby. But now she is just a normal chatterbox who knows shes the love of my life.

My second , who will be adopted in 2 weeks, was a shaken baby. He's been with me since he was 3 mo old. He had brain stem damage and 14 fractures. He is now 2 1/2 and is a happy running laughing boy, he has a few motor skill delays and has had a very hard time learning to talk, but he can finally say mommy, he has had to have 3 brain surgeries and now has a shunt. his mental status is fine. He is the son of my heart and so dear to me I have to cry when I remember the battered little thing they brought me.

My 3rd is a 12 yo girl who I knew was mine when she was only in this house a week. We are still getting to know one another and she having to learn to live in a family, something shes never done. She has no medical problems. Her adoption should be within the year.

None of my adoptions cost me one cent!!!!! I have had many many babies come through my home, I could have adopted any number of them, they (DSS) always ask me first if I'd like to adopt them just before they put them on the adoption rolls.

Fostercare can fill a void if you go at it with the right attitude and knowing that you will loose some and yes it will hurt, but your special child is out there, just keep looking!
