Please Help ! Share info Breakdown Adopting from State (foster care systems) By State
There really doesn't seem to be any 'central' place for this info - and I am sure it changes - but I am also sure I am not the only one that would like some type of basis for this.
SOOOOooooo If you have any of the information for adoption a child from another state - please share! Please include as much info as possible and especially on: State Adopted from Can you call social workers direct in that state - or do you need to go through your social worker? Costs associated from that state Does the state reimburse your state (IE in PA if yours state homestudy is used for a child from another state there is a cost associated) Did you travel to the other state to meet the child? Transition visits? Any other info that we should know? I would really love to gather this for as many states as possible - and if we can get some responses I will try and get them posted in a one page spread sheet or something similar to make things easier Thanks in advance! Diane

this link leads to my post about Adoption By State. It is spreadsheet of adoption by state. It might not have all the stuff you asked for, but certainly you can add to it on your own.

We have not adopted yet from another state, but started looking into different states as children were presented to us. I'm assuming from your post you are looking for very specific experiences that others have gone through, but every situation will be sooooo different. Many things can be variables and change the case. I'm sure you can pick a state if you think you will have a better adoption experience or shorter wait or something, but for the most part we are being told where the kids are from not picking them out by state. I realize we are more specific in that we are adopting Native American, but I still believe every time it will be different. For example we were asked about kids in Washington State and were chosen for them within one day. When it came to Kansas it is taking 3 months for a judge to give an answer. The special needs criteria is different for each state among many other things. Sorry I don't have a personal story to share, but I have found the following site to be extremely helpful during our journey. You can pick a state and it will tell you the answer to 13 questions about that state's adoption assistance laws. If you search around you will find lots more about the different states and their individual laws among other things under the left hand column under "For prospective parents". Any ideas what kind of child(ren) you would like to adopt? Good luck, hope this helps.

Hey Diane,
Are you still around? I found this thread and thought I would check in and see how you were doing. We (in MO) were recently matched with a now 13 y/o young lady from OK and we are currently visiting her and waiting for the ICPC paperwork to be completed. I just found this website for anyone that might be interested, it even gives ICPC contact info for each state. http://icpc.aphsa.org/ We're trying to find out as much as we can about ICPC and what needs to happen so we can get her home with us. We have to drive almost 8 hours one way to see her, so bringing her back here with us would be impossible because we can't get off work more than a 3 day weekend. I think we'll maybe pick her up and stay at a hotel or resort or something if nothing else. Just seeing her for a day and having to return her to the Fosterhome is hard. We'll see, any ideas from anyone would be much appreciated to expedite this process.

we have a 10 year old girl who was placed with us from NJ at age 9. to answer your questions
-we called the social worker to confirm they were still accepting home studies, then had our agency forward ours. later we called the NJ sw to make sure it was received. -NJ was very willing to reimburse costs for travel, our agency's fees, etc. -we travelled to meet the child for the first visit. we stayed in a hotel for the weekend and took her out for day visits during that time. -after that she came to us for weekend visits over a period of 6 weeks. for the first couple of these visits her sw drove her down and actually stayed at a nearby hotel for the weekend, in case we or the child needed her. I can't say enough about how helpful she was through the whole process. -after that we would usually meet the sw halfway to get our daughter to & from the weekend visits. I've heard a lot of bad things about dyfs but I have to say our experience with NJ has been very positive. Most of their waiting children seem to be AA and they are very open to placing children transracially. |

State Adopted from ~ Texas
Can you call social workers direct in that state - or do you need to go through your social worker? ~ Yes we had person contact with both the placing social worker and the adoption placement worker Costs associated from that state ~ we paid it all out of pocket but should be reimbursed up to $1500 after finalization. Does the state reimburse your state (IE in PA if yours state homestudy is used for a child from another state there is a cost associated) ~ We had a private agency do our homestudy, but yes TX is willing to reimburse for that as well, as long as we do not exceed our $1500. I feel that the tax credit will more than reimburse us though! Did you travel to the other state to meet the child? ~ Yes. We, my son and I, went on a Friday and returned on a Wed with the child. Transition visits? Not for our particular child, but maybe on some children.
