Question Adopting Respite Care Children

Maybe someone could help me with this...my husband and I did some respite care for two children and fell in love with them! They are going to come available for adoption but we are not sure who to talk to about being considered for them. The kids did not want to return to their current foster home (nothing against that foster mom they just wanted to stay with us) and we are not sure what to do. Can anyone help?

Hi Theresa,

Well, as you know the foster parents are usually given the first chance to adopt them as they have lived with them. If you want, you can call the children's worker and let him/her know that you'd like to be considered should their foster parents decide not to adopt.

Best of luck.

Michelle

You have brought back so many memories for me. We provided regular respite for a sibling group, brother and sister, whom we also fell in love with. They had been in their foster home for 2 1/2 years but that family was not interested in adopting them. We tried so hard to get them but in the end they were placed with another family that they did not know. We were told &Iguote "If they can bond to you they can bond with someone else".....my answer than why did they cry whenever they left to go back with their foster family (nothing against the other foster family, we are actually friends). We have not seen them now in over 6 months and it has been very hard I just pray that they are with a great family that loves them as much as we did.

Please go directly to their CW and see what you can do. I, unlike what I was told, believe that sometimes there is an instant bond and that does not mean that they will bond with just anyone.

I agree, contact their worker.

How long have you been fostering? I don't know if you're familiar with RAD, but if not, look it up. I know my children with RAD did not want to come home after going to respite. Having fostered for so many years now, doing respite myself and seeing the fc begging to stay with me, I now know that this is common with children with RAD.

How old are the children? Be careful even considering adopting children older than your children.

Update

Just a quick update for ya'll. I took everyones advice and contacted their worker. After confering with the foster mom (who is strictly doing this to foster and has no desire to adopt) all have agreed that a placement with us would be in the best interest of the kids. However, we are still waiting for the TPR to be completed. Grandparents had to decide if they wanted the kid or not and have decided they didn't. We are to begin visits soon.

I still have my other two children and things aren't looking too good on their returning to their homes, so possibly two more there.

Thank all of you for your help and advice!
