Nashville

Welcome y'all! Tee-hee-hee!

We adopted Bella from Bethany Christian Services here in Nashville. We'd love to hook up with anyone else in our area who adopted, especially anyone who adopted transracially.

Maybe I'm not too informed with this terminology, but exactly what is a "transracial adoptive mother"? I adopted 2 little girls and a couple of years ago fostered a biracial little girl whom I loved so very much, but I'm not familiar with the above mentioned term. Please let me know.

Transracial

Hi!
Whenever you adopt a child that is of a different race than yourself, it's considered transracial adoption. If you're White and you adopt a child that's biracial, or Chinese, or Black, that's it. My husband and I are both White. Bella is biracial--her birth mother is White and her birth father is Black.
Hope that helps!
Sarah

Thanks for the info and yes I understand now. It is more common for Whites to adopt outside of their race than for Blacks or other "minorities. Thanks again for the info.

Amazing! Dh and I are moving to TN, Nashville area. We have talked about Bethany. We may use them for our 2nd adoption.

I would love to hear of your experience with Bethany.

Babypink

PS: I am Mexican and dd is cc. Dh is cc. So for me this is a transracial adoption. We are open to a biracial adoption as well.

Bethany

Hello!

Yes, you are a transracially adoptive parent if you are any race other than your child's. It's great for you to point that out.

Bethany is a wonderful agency that is very supportive and not afraid to answer most any question you may have. Their local number is 615-242-0909. Tammy Bass is the adoptive parents' counselor. She's really sweet. She held our hand the whole way through and was great about addressing any concerns we had.

Nashville is a great place to live. Becoming much more culturally tolerant all the time. We live in what used to be a redneck-only area. We now have Black and Hispanic families in our neighborhoods. We've only been here three years and have seen positive changes in that time.

Age

Many agencies simply say that you can be no more than, say, 45 years older than the child you want to adopt. You would have to check with particular agencies in what their requirements are as to age. I would suggest Bethany and Catholic Charities in Nashville for infant or international and international or the state for older-child adoptions.
Best of luck!
Let us know how it's going!

International Adoption & I-600A

Hi!

My husband and I hope to adopt a child from the Ukraine. We live near Knoxville, TN.

For those of you who adopted internationally, do you remember what you answered for question 14 in the I-600A form?

14. Will the child come to the US for adoption after compliance with the preadoption requirements, if any, of the state of proposed residence?

Yes or No

I hear the answer is state dependent...

Thanks!
Wildannie
