Does anyone know what the New York Laws are in adopting a baby in New York, like how long the mother has to change her mind or expenses and anything else we should know if we adopt w/ New York birthmother?

The birthmother may sign anytime after the baby's birth.
There are two ways the birthmother can sign relinquishments: judicial and extra-judicial. Judicial consent (meaning she went to court and appeared before a judge to terminate her rights) is irrevocable at that time. The waiting period for extra-judicial consent is 45 days. Allowable expenses are medical, hospital, legal, counseling, and some other pregnancy related expenses. Expenses are allowed up to 30 days post-partum. Also, I think New York is an agency only state. New York is not an agency only state; independent adoptions are legal.
Also, I believe that expenses can be paid for 6 weeks after the baby's birth, not just 30 days. |
