Hi everyone, I notice that the CO board isn't checked very often, so hopefully someone will be able to help. We're already with an agency and of course I'll ask them these questions, but just wanted to see if anyone knows how out-of-state adoption works. If one of my friends or family knows of someone out-of-state who is thinking about making an adoption plan and hears about us, how does that work?? What do they do? Do we then follow Colorado's laws or their states? Or both?
Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

You might try posting this question on the General Adoptive Parent Board too, because it's likely more people will see it and have answers to your question.

Hi there. We're in a similar boat. We're with an agency and networking nationwide. Here's how it works...if you connect with expectant parents in another state, you must abide by the rules of that state for the adoption. For example, you'll need to work with an agency/attorney in the expectant parent's state for relinquishment, legals, and ICPC. You can plan on staying in that state after placement for about 10-14 days while the ICPC clears, giving your agency here authorization to finalize the adoption. After that, you'll come home and your agency here will handle the post-placement visits and paperwork. You'll finalize here in Colorado with the agency you're contracted with.
Hope this helps! ![]() |
