Can anyone help me please/adopting cousins baby!
My cousin has three children already and is a single parent.....she is now pregnant again and has asked me to take the baby. Since I cant have kids of my own, this made me very happy! However, I contacted a lawyer about this and we had "Child Custody " papers drawn up and we both signed them with her agreeing to sign all papers that need to be signed for the eventual adoption, and for the baby to come home with me from the hospital. How legal will these papers be at the hospital when it comes time for the baby to go home with me and what will I have to go through after that to get the adoption finalized? The lawyer says this is the easiest part......but he has been so vague and tells me this is all he can do until the baby actually exist!? Is this true? Can anyone help me with what I am going to be faced with?
Thanks, Lisa Brunswick County,NC

I'M GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING. ONLY MY COUSIN LIVES IN OHIO. A LWAYER ADVISED ME OF THE SAME THING. TO HAVE PAPERS SIGNED TO BE ABLE TO BRING THE CHILD HOME. HE ALSO SAID YOU CAN'T FILE ANYTHING UNTIL THE BABY ARRIVES. PRIVATE ADOPTIONS ARE ALREADY FINALIZED BY THE TIME OF THE BIRTH. RELATIVES ARE EASIER ADOPTIONS BUT THERE HAS TO A LIVE BIRTH FIRST SO THAT THE BILOGICAL MOTHER CAN SIGN THE BABY TO YOU. KEEP ME POSTED ON THE EVENTS MAYBE WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER.

It is my understanding that NO adoption is finalized at the time of birth. Once the child is born (and after a waiting period determined by the state), a birthmom can sign the papers, but the adoption is not finalized in court until later.
