Question Help

We need some help - we are considering adoption but have no idea how to get started. We aren't rich and don't know how to afford the prices I've seen in some of the research I've done.

What age, race and sex of child?

What is important here is that if your looking for an older child over the age of 7 an child of an minority race, or a larger sibling group then maybe foster to adopt might be a possiblity but the state places few babies straight in need of adoption.
if not let everyone you know that your hoping to adopt and write them.
Take care

Contact you local child and family services office.... What ever it is called CPS,DHS and ask for the adoptin unit...or contact.

It is not true that the state places few babies....They do come up. Often there is a longer wait---but, everyone I know who has wanted a baby under 1 year has eventually recieved their dream. The process is slow--the wait is long but in the end well worth it.

Right now in Oregon we have a 2 1/2 year old little girl and her 9 month old brother waiting--they are both healthy and have met all milestones.....they appear to form good attachments.

This past summer the birthmother of our two siblings had a baby. The parental rights were terminated within weeks of delivery. We could not take the baby due to the needs of our daughter--so someone has just recieved a beautiful -- healthy baby boy!

It happens--and it takes time and tolerance. One woman I know from suppot group waitied for two years for an infant---a year later birthmom had another! Both children are being adopted by the same family and both children were placed in their adoptive family at less then 6 months of age!

State adoptions are usually free--if there are any fees they are generally under $500.00 most states offer adopton subsidies for families who adopt through the state to cover te costs of any special needs that may come up....usually the children have medical coverage until they are 18---many sates have started or will start to offer college assistance for any child who has ever recieved adoption subsidies.... State adoptions provide training and assistance and services even after placement.

Many of the children do come from backgrouds where drug use and other things have occured. Some of he children have some very serious issues to deal with. The training and education will help families detemine what they can deal with or not.

Good luck

adoption in NE

We have gone through NE Childrens Home Society. There is no fee they only ask you to make them your favorite charity. The only fees we have paid is for our background checks and the lawyer. They do have a website it is www.nchs.org They are also located in the phone book. Good luck

Carrie thanks for the information but I know that if we already have 3 children and are only open to ages 0-4 that Nebraska childrens home would not even consider working with us years ago when we had only one child they more or less asked why we were even their at the information meeting. But again thanks for sharing and take care

Unhappy NCHS offered little hope for us today

I just recieved my reply from NCHS today. It's true. THey offer first to couple with no children, then to those with one. We were given little hope since we have 2. That's ok though. I really believe that's how it should be..., but it's still hard. They were very nice and offered to send us an invite to an informative meeting on international adoptions.
