Domestic adoption - Colorado

Hi -
We're just beginning the domestic adoption process -
Does anyone have any suggestions on agencies to
use?
Also, for those who've done domestic adoption here
how long did you have to wait till you got your baby?
Thanks for any advice - at this point it all
seems confusing -
Margie

Hi Margie and welcome!
I know all this does seem confusing and overwhelming. But once you get the ball rolling, it's not so bad.
We used Adoption Alliance for our adoption. They are fantastic. Other people here on our forum have used them too and were very happy.
They are located in Denver and the director is Barb Moe. She is a really awesome lady and will fill your house with kids if you want her to!!
Her phone is 303- 584-9900 ex 28. She can get you started and the fees are not high.
We actually were looking for a boy around age 7, and after six weeks of walking into her office for the very first time, we had a seven month old boy. It was an absolute whirlwind of an experience. Now we are updating our homestudy and getting ready to start looking for a sibling group. We are very excited. Good luck on your road to parenthood. Hang on, the ride can be bumpy. But it's worth it!
Liz

Hi Margie. We're in similar positions. I began my research about a month ago. Best thing I did was purchase a book called "Adoption in Colorado" at Tattered Cover for $8.00. It goes through the adoption process and what the Colorado laws are. The book also lists the state licensed agencies in the back of the book with brief synopsis of each agency's general guidelines like average time to placement, age requirements, fees, home study processing time, religious affiliations & so on.

Next step is to call the ones that appear to be in alignment with our religious preferences and budget to get more information. Then we'll be in a better position to choose our agency. I also picked up the "Idiots Guide to Adoption" which gives a checklist of what to look for in a good agency.

We're hopefully going to be ready to choose an agency and start the process after the 1st of the year. We have a million fears and just as many things to do.

All the best,
Loie

One of the best agencies in the country is Catholic Charities in CO Springs.

My husband and I are just starting the process as well. We have chosen Designated Adoption Service in Lakewood. They are an open adoption agency, very small, they only take 12 adoptive/waiting parents at a time. It is run by two awesome woman. We are just now in the process of turning in our paperwork this Friday and will then begin the homestudy. I have two friends who also recommended DA to me and they could not be happier with their decision. I have no idea how long we will have to wait, but both my friends only waited about 6 months each. Hope this helps, thier website is www.openadopt.net. Good luck!
Kathleen

We ended up selecting Adoption Alliance. We're on a waiting list, but it came down to two local agencies. One placed 9 infants last year and Adoption Alliance placed 27. The numbers made our decision for us.

Best of luck to you in your information search!
