Smile Adoption Attorney

My husband and I are in the process of possibly beginning an Independent Adoption. Does anyone know or HAS ANYONE USED a reputable adoption attorney in NC?

Thanks!

Attorney info

I spoke to an Attorney Thurman in Charlotte and he told me that in this state they can not act as a facilitator. They can only do the legal paperwork if you already have a birthmother who wants to give her child to you. Friends of ours in GA went through an attorney. I am thinking about looking into other states and there laws. I also live in NC.

Smile NC adoption attorney

There are some reputable attorneys in NC that are able to do adoptions. They cannot however do the homestudy. That must be done through an agency (we went through Social Services). We found an attorney in our area (Hickory) that is licensed for adoptions. They work with birthmothers and Christian couples. They are very good and very reasonable. My husband and I were working with this attorney as well as Social Services with the hope that between the two we would find a child faster (we had already waited over two years). Within just a few months both my husband and I and some very dear friends both had new babies (one through the attorney, the other through social services). If you would like the name of the attorney, you may email me directly at joebren@charter.net.

Thank you so much! We have already found a birthmother, so we just need someone to do all the "dirty work"

I am so grateful this fell into our laps, because we were going to adopt from Guatemala (we were all done, except we just needed some money! ) We were a bit depressed about the money thing, but this will be so much less expensive!!!!!!!

peace,

I used the Lawyer Referral service which the State Bar recommended to me. The attorney's name they gave me was one they had listed as an adoption specialist. I thought I was safe.

This attorney told me I did not need to comply with the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children. I am here in NC and my daughter was born in South Carolina. Well, I do have to comply and I am now in a legal mess.

Attorney number 2 sent the birth parents (they are not married or in the same household) forms that included my full name and address. I have been harrassed and visited.

Neither of these attorneys will accept responsibility for their actions. There are legal steps but they won't help you in the here and now.

I am not trying to scare you. Just please be aware that some attorneys proclaiming themselves as 'adoption experts' don't have a clue.

I did see a website for the American Association of Adoption Attorneys. I have not used them nor do I know anyone that has. From what I read it would be worth checking out, though.

Good luck! It is all worth it!
