Nicaraguan Adoption - Possible?
I am a single, 25 year American born male that would like to adopt a specific child (7 year old girl) from Nicaragua. I have worked with the child for the past two years via trips to Nicaragua with my church and after much thinking, prayer, and discussions with her family I would like to adopt her.
Originally, she and her two sisters were living at an orphanage in Jinotepe. Her mother was a prostitute and unable to care for the girls. The government came in towards the end of 2008 and removed the girls from the orphanage and required them to move back in with their mother. Their mother does not always have work, and therefore cannot always provide food. They are currently lucky to receive one meal a day. The mother said she would be willing to give up all parental rights to the child, but we are all unsure as to the whereabouts of the father or if he is even alive. We are also unsure if there any other relatives the government might try to place her with. CAN ANYONE SHARE ABOUT SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTING A NON-RELATIVE CHILD FROM NICARAGUA?? I would appreciate any details, including: - how to get the child declared as eligible to be adopted - how to streamline the process and who to talk to - how to be granted guardianship to adopt in the US - etc. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! |

Thanks for the link - I have actually done quite a bit of research and have already entered talks with an American lawyer. I have, however, run into difficulties getting information from Nicaragua.
My biggest gap at this point is understanding the Nicaraguan side of things and what all of this would entail. Therefore, any personal experiences, people you recommend contacting in Nicaragua, lawyers you recommend, etc. would be very beneficial. Thanks! Chris |
