Question Mexico adoptions

I know this is really not the right place to post this, because Mexico is NOT in Central or South America, but I was curious if anyone has adopted from Mexico? (there did not seem to be any board on this) According to the U.S. Dept of State site, adoptions from Mexico do happen (close to a 100 of children adopted into the U.S. in 2005)and infants are available there too and the timeframe is listed as 3-6 months. I am just puzzled as how many people adopt from other Latin American countries and I have never heard anything about Mexico.

I originally looked into Mexico

When I was starting adoption research, I tried researching adoptions from Mexico, and (at the time, about 4 years ago... so information could be different now) found -- at least with only surface information -- that adoptions from Mexico were said to be very difficult. This is because each region in Mexico has its own government and laws, seperate from one another, not one unified, federal adoption process.

I have heard of people adopting successfully from Mexico, but everyone I had read about had been an American living in Mexico at the time of the adoption.

I hope you here something more encouraging from others here. I know at the time I was adopting, I couldn't even find agencies with a Mexico program.

I would love to adopt from Mexico in the future, as it seems like Guatemala might not be an option for us for a second adoption.

Good luck,
D.

ddhuab,

Thanks for the response. I am not sure why I started looking at Mexico, I have a general interest in adoption and correspond with many people who have adopted, are in the process or are looking at countries, so I was curious. I also found that the process may be difficult, because there is a requirement to stay in country for a period of 6 months unless judge waives it. I do not think we will adopt again, we have two from Poland, but I am interested in advising others and thought this was an option. Some Americans find Latin American children very attractive, so I thought Mexico would also appeal to them as well, especially because it is geographically close and the relationship with the U.S. is close. Thank you again for sharing your experience.
