Mexico: Adoptions hopefully getting easier.
Mexico, ah the land of mystique and intrigue...good for a spy novel, not so good for an adoption partner. But yet we field many, many, inquiries about adoptions from Mexico. So as an update on what is happening in Mexico here is a "news" brief:
Jalisco: Oct. 04.. a little girl who was adopted by a step-father (wholly national adoption by Mexican nationals...no foreign adoption issues) was killed by the same just weeks after approval by the DIF (Mex. Welfare Dept.). Of the 5 commissioners who oversee adoptions 3 are being reviewed for dereliction of duty...seems that the girls mother had filed a report with the DIF prior to the adoption being approved... Public outcry for a review of the processes. Puts a snag in DIF interviews which are impacting several pending matters...but life goes on. Opinion: Federal government needs to intercede to have a formalized international adoption program....country needs to admit that it can not care for all the dispossessed and poor children of the country and get some of these three years old begging on the side of busy streets off the streets and into potential adoptive situations. Private Adoptions: Much easier than public even though the consular (read US) officials sneer at the birth mother calling them everything but monsters for surrendering the rights to a foreign US couple..."what kind of mother are you for giving up your child???"...a question frequently poised to Birth mom in the interview prior to granting the requisite permission to establish orphaned status. Public Adoptions: Many children available…but no concise or organized fashion to make them available. DIF has sooo.... many hoops to jump through…can be done…but I prefer the private/birth mother route. Still we are trying to open this facet up some due to the high volume of need and the poor children who will grow up as institutionalized children…better than the street I guess… Well enough of my “two cents” worth….life is a struggle, but still much as the sun rises so do we…have a good day all and a Happy Thanksgiving.
