Heart Adoption from Sri Lanka

Has anyone adopted from Sri Lanka? Or is anyone in the process? I found an agency in Toronto, Cornerstone, that says we are eligible but it seems that very few people are adopting from there. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Even if you have no clue about Canada and are willing to share information about Americans adopting form Sri Lanka, it would sitll be great.

Also interested in adopting from Sri Lanka

Hello. My husband and I are also interested in adopting from Sri Lanka. There is one agency I have found in the United States, but I don't know much about it. I know it is a new program and are in the process of placing 2 children to two separate families but have not placed any yet. We remain very interested in Sri Lanka, but are in trying to find out as much information about adopting from the country as we can. If anyone else has adopted from Sri Lanka or are further along in the process, please let me/us know what your experience has been.

Thank you!

Sri Lanka has always been problematic. The long-experienced agency through which I adopted my daughter from China used to have a Sri Lanka program, but had to close it because of the difficulties in completing ethical adoptions in a timely manner.

I would be very cautious about trying to adopt from Sri Lanka. Remember that it is Hague-compliant, and you MUST use a licensed agency that is Hague-accredited. You can find a list of Hague-accredited agencies on the U.S. State Department website. Independent adoptions are not permitted. Check out the agency's track record with other programs, and go only with an agency that is highly experienced with international adoption. And if you go with a pilot or new program, recognize that there is a high degree of risk.

Thank you, Sharon. We have no intention of proceeding without an agency. The agency we've found seems quite reputable, and their Sri Lankan program is quite small (only 5 kids were placed last year). I hope this makes trafficking hard and I know that after the tsunami it was a major issue. If we do go with Sri Lanka, we'll keep in mind your warning.

Cool

Hi all,
did anyone end up going forward with the process? We are just getting started to adopt from Sri Lanka and I would love to get in touch with other families that are going through the same!
We are with Cornerstone and, so far, they are treating us right. Also, I am confident that they work in an ethical way.

If someone is interested, I am writing a blog on our journey to our Sri Lankan baby: Cinnamon Baby
