Waiting for a referral
We are waiting for a referral for a child of mixed race that will be born in Japan any minute.
For those who have already adopted from Japan, how long do you have to be there to pick up the child? Any tips on what we should do while we are there? Thank you. |

We are military stationed here in Japan. We have just started the adoption of our son. It will take six months in court before the judge will make a final decision. You will need to be in Japan for those six months and I have read that Japan will not grant custody to someone here on a visitors visa. I could be wrong though. Are you here in Japan? Are you planning on staying a while? We will most likely be here another 4 years. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Staying in Japan
Per our agency, we do not have to stay in Japan for any length of time. Rules have changed. While it will not be final for 6 months, our home agency will do the post placement visits and report to Japan. We don't even have to go - you can have children brought over by escorts - but of course we want to go over.
Thank you for your response though. It might be different if you are living in Japan versus adopting from the US. Anybody with experience adopting from the US want to weigh in? |
