Anyone adopted from Nepal?

I am interested in Nepalese adoption, and we meet the qualifications...

I was looking at CHI and wondering if their fee/estimates are realistic -- they seem lower than most places I have been looking at.

Feel free to PM me about your agency/experience.

Thank you,
D.

I can't really help with info. about fees (but I could try to find out, from a friend of mine).

But, I live in Nepal (for the past 3 years). The children here are beautiful. My hubby teases me that it's a good thing we already have 3 boys and 3 girls, and so don't qualify, or else we'd move back to the States with a few more kids!

If anyone wants information about Nepal more generally, pictures, info. about disease, climate, different ethnic groups (there are about 50!, and at least two distinctly different "looks" in people - some more Tibetan/Chinese, some more "Indian"), I would be happy to help anyway I can.

Nepal is a desperately poor country, riven by a terrible insurgency. The law here makes it very difficult for unwanted children -- if no Nepali father accepts paternity, these poor babies can't even get Nepali citizenship -- it only passes through the father. So, if the father is a foreigner, or unknown, these children grow up with no rights to the limited government services there are. Very, very sad...

Hello, How is the process going?

I live in Spain but I'm a UK citizen. I also "fit the bill" for Nepal and that is the road I'm going down.

I've just about finished my home study and am now gathering all information for Nepal. It's looking good and was told that the overall cost would be in the region of about 9,000 Euros. I should point out that (a) we don't pay for our home study in Mallorca (b) maybe the costs are completely different in the USA

I've been told that I will have to go to Nepal twice which doesn't seem to be the case in the USA?

If your continuing with Nepal, I'd love to hear from you.
Take care.

Nepal was early on our short list of countries to pursue research on... I never did find a lot of agencies that dealt with Nepal, and for many reasons we decided on Guatemala! I am pretty close to being finished with the paper work here for our homestudy, and hope to have the dossier ready before the end of the year, for sure.

Good luck in your process... it would be nice if anyone else who is pursuing/has pursued Nepalese adoption would post here, as I found ALL information I could find helpful in my own decision to adopt. Also, it is wonderful if you can find a support group to help you through the long process.

I wish you well and would love to learn more.

Good luck,
D.

ddhuab.........Many thanks for your reply.

I also hope to have paperwork in for christmas so it should be exciting. We should keep in touch.

I've been busy posting messages on this USA site and the UK link (didn't realise there was a UK link) so hopefully should be a veteran by this time next week!

Got to go as need to go food shopping (its 17.30 my time), good luck and keep in touch. Pinkie

Nearly forgot to mention.......there doesn't seem to be many agencies here either!

RE: Nepalese adoption. We found out that we could only adopt a child over the age of 6 from Nepal as my husband and I are 51 years old. With great regret we had to let our dreams of a Nepalese adoption disappear. We are now focusing on Guatemala which will be the best choice for us because of our "advanced" ages!?!?!
Good luck to all.

Amazing how labels such as "advanced ages" and "single status" start to be a big issue when there are so many children that need a loving and safe enviroment.

I was originally looking at China but was told that as I am "single", I would have to wait along time.......No matter as I am focused and will get there in the end.

I have been told that a child from Nepal would be at least 3 years old but as I have said that I would accept a child up to 4, shouldn't be an issue.

I'll keep you posted and the very best of luck with Guatemala.

Unhappy Nepal Adoptions

I wanted to share with you that we just received word last evening that the Goverment of Nepal has suspended all international adoptions for at least three months according to our agency. Needless to say we are completely devestated as nothing has gone right for us. Back in June we received a referral only to hear from the US Embassy that they would not issue a visa for our soon to be son. It seems that the orphange stands accused of trafficking children. So while we tried to pursuade the US goverment to hear this little boy's case, our agency here in the States contunied to search. Now we are left with a dossier for a country that is asking us to wait while it reviews its policies and practices. All the while, my husband and I are left wondering if we will meet these new policies???

I sincerely hope that things work out. It seems so unfair that you have been waiting since June and now have to wait even longer without knowing the end result.

I am using this Forum but I'm based in Spain so therefore using a Spanish Forum aswell. Just a few short days ago someone posted a notice on the Spanish Forum saying how they had just got back from their first visit to Nepal and were hoping that their second and final visit to collect their son would be soon. I'm know wondering if they will be met with the same news as yourselves. I may give it a few days and then ask how they are getting along and if they reply I'll let you know.

I'm also going to call the Embassy and a few other people here in Spain on Monday to see what they have to say.

I would sincerely appreciate any information you have as Nepal is the country I'm concentrating on!

If you don't mind telling me the name of the orphanage I'd appreciate it, but if your not comfortable with telling me I'd understand.

Once again, the very best of luck to you and my thoughts are with you today.

Adopting from Nepal

I don't mind sharing, not sure why I would be uncomfortable....Our agency is currently aligned with the Childrens Welfare Service Center. They do have a website, so you can look it up. Another family from our agency left for Nepal on the 5th and arrived there on the 7th. They submitted their paperwork in Nepal without a problem and were accepted before the program shut down. That is all I currently know. So hopefully for their sake they will come home with a child shortly after the first of the year. If you hear anything else please feel free to share it. I have tried contacting the US embassy in Nepal but to no avail so far. I am hopeful that they can provide me with more information.

On Sunday 17th october an article appeared in one of the spanish newspapers outlining the problem in Nepal. The same day a couple of people posted messages on the spanish forum but nothing that we didn't already know.

I called my local honorary consulate and was led to believe that things should get back to normal fairly soon but my social services called me on friday urging me to seriously re-consider my options.

Needless to say, as much as Nepal has not been ruled out, I am now looking at other countries.

Any Nepal news or updates would be appreciated.
