Hi! My name is Siti and I am currently looking into the possiblities of adopting a baby from M'sia. I would like to know more about the procedures of adopting from M'sia. Both my husband and I are singaporean and are trying to gather as much information about the adoption procedures. I will appreciate if any members can enlighten me about the procedures.

It is almost impossible to adopt from Malaysia...

... and you should carefully investigate before giving money to anyone who says he/she can facilitate such an adoption.

Muslim children cannot be adopted by non-Muslims. Some families trying to adopt non-Muslim children have had to reside in Malaysia for two years or more, according to the U.S. State Department.

Recently, a person or organization has been trying to promote adoption from Sarawak, which has an adoption law that is different from that of the rest of Malaysia. However, the credentials of this person or organization are uncertain, and the U.S. State Department says that the children may not meet the requirements of the U.S. INS in terms of eligibility for an adoption visa.

As far as the rest of the country, the bureau to contact in Malaysia is the Family and Children’s Division, Social Welfare Department, Ministry of National Unity and Social Development. You can reach them, according to the U.S. State Department, at:

14th Floor Wisma Shen
50100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
