adopted a special needs child in 2002, tax question
Wow! I am so glad I found this place. Can you help me?
We adopted a special needs child (yes, I am sure) during 2002 and only paid $20. Will we be able to "cash in" on the $10,000 tax credit even though we adopted him in2002? and not in 2003? Not that we were adopting for that but we wouldn't say no.

my understanding of the law is that you must have finalized in 2003. If you were placed in 2002 but have yet to finalize you can take the credit on your 2003 returns. otherwise you are only elligable for expenses.

Stormy,
Thank you for your quick answer. This is what I thought. However, have you read the thread on new tax law posted on here? ![]()

There is a specific forum for tax questions on this board. You might find some helpful info on it.
My understanding of the law is that if you finalized any adoption in 2002, you may only claim your expenses that were not reimbursed by the state. If you finalize a SPECIAL NEEDS adoption this year or later, you can take the entire $10,600 credit, regardless of expenses. |
