Our amazing story!

My husband and I married in 1998 and began immediately trying to conceive (I was 35 years old at the time). After several months of no luck, we consulted an infertility specialist and tried two rounds of intrauterine insemination (again, no luck). Our next step was in vitro, but since our goal was parenthood and not pregnancy, we chose to pursue adoption. In May of 2000, we began working with a small, non-profit Christian agency and took our time getting our home study completed. In August, we got a call about a 2-month-old boy available for adoption...would we please hurry and get our home study finished? We decided against parenting "Ryan" because we just weren't ready and he had multiple birth-related disorders we didn't feel capable of handling. In September, we got a call about a newborn girl...would we have our social worker fax our home study to the agency (in another state) even though it was already in the mail?

We made the 9-hour drive to pick up our new daughter, held her, named her, changed her diapers and fed her, only to be told the next morning when we arrived to take her home from the hospital that the birth mom had changed her mind. We were devastated.

My parents had accompanied us on the trip and drove us home in a daze. My mother kept saying "God will bless you for your faithfulness and perseverance...keep trusting Him." Over the next few weeks, she began insisting we would be blessed with twins (although our agency had NEVER placed a multiple birth) and followed that revelation with the fact that it would be twin girls! I kept patting her hand and saying "Sure, Mom, okay."

My wonderful, blessed mother passed away in February 28, 2001...all the while insisting God was going to bless us with twin daughters. "Just wait and see," she said. When I returned to my job exactly one week later, I had an email from our agency saying they were in the initial stages of working with a birth mom who was pregnant with twins...were we interested? My immediate response was "YES, YES, YES!!!"

Over the course of the next several weeks, the birth mom struggled with her decision, went into premature labor at 23 weeks and remained in the hospital on bedrest. We found out she was carrying twin girls shortly after her hospitalization.

Two weeks before the girls were born, we met the birth mom via telephone...one week later, we traveled to meet her in person. Just one week after our face-to-face meeting, our daughters were born at 31 weeks gestation. They spent only 29 days in NICU and are now happy, healthy, growing 10-month-olds.

I thank God every day for the vision my mom had...that she was able to share in our joy in some way. And I am also eternally grateful to our birth mom, who made a decision more painful than any I can imagine...all for the sake of these two amazing little angel girls!

Thanks for letting me share.
