Depends. We did mine about 2 months after we were home. Mine was held at a restaurant and we didn't take lil one out into public enclosed places until he was 6 weeks old.

My shower was 3 weeks after he was home, so he was about 7 weeks old.

Our first one was with friends in the state where our son was born! lol. The first one at home was the weekend after we arrived home, so our son was 4 weeks old. We NEEDED it to be right after we arrived because he was a baby born so I literally had NOTHING when I left to get him in TX :-) I bought a carseat, some bottles, some onesies and sleepers, and a pack n' play while in TX but otherwise we didn't have a thing. No stroller, very few clothes, only the blankets the hospital gave and one pack of receiving blankets I bought, no swing, etc. So for us having the shower right away was important. Also I knew everyone would want to meet him right away, so I figured we might as well get it over all in one day instead of having a few people dropping by every day for weeks.Of course this was in May, not in the heart of cold and flu season, so if he had been born in January and spent the same week in the NICU, I wouldn't have wanted all of those people around.

With our second son, who was born at the end of January, we waited about a month after we got home, so he was 6 weeks old, and we had a "sip n' see" open house where people could come meet him but weren't expected to bring gifts.

Ours was a surprise shower when DS was 2 months old. Since he was our 3rd child, I REALLY didn't expect a shower so it was a total surprise. I did not want anything from anybody until the 30 day revocation period was up.

We had several friends and family give us gifts, but we opted not to have a shower until the finalization occured. We just did not want to have a shower and then something happen. We had been through that before and could not do it again.

My son was born just after Thanksgivivng and I had an open house for him in January. He met many members of the family and friends at various Christmas parties throughout December. He also got alot of stuff that I needed for Christmas. I waited until January to have his open house so that we could have a day to celebrate just him. I had a cake, party favors, and games. Everyone took turns holding him, feeding him, and playing with him.

Mine was a suprise shower when DS was about a month old. I totally was not expecting it! That was good timing. I was over the exhaustion that kicks in on week 2 and was willing to let others hold him and he was much cuter and interactive at that age.

My work and our church held showers for us within two to three weeks of bringing home the baby. My family 'back home' held a money shower for us about three to four weeks afterwards. Then when I first took the baby 'back home' my parents hosted a little meet and greet.

I have a friend that adopted and they had her baby shower within a week of bringing the baby home.

I personally am not a big proponent of having the shower before the baby comes home. I also live in a state where TPR is irrevocable and can be signed within 72 hours of birth - so not a long period of risk. It was nice to have the shower fairly soon because I got stuff I needed, but I just wouldn't want to do it before hand in case something didn't work out.

My girlfriends threw a "welcome home" shower for us! They waited until we were settled and the baby was home. It was about 3 weeks or so.

It was really a neat experience. Everyone got a chance to meet her personally!!!

I completely agree with having the shower after TPR. It's really the way to be fair to you and your guests. What if something disrupted the adoption? Save yourself that added grief and hold off.

We won't be having anything official until after we've finalized. However, some local family/friends did throw us a small luncheon (around 7 people total) when we got back from ICPC.
