Last weeks Parenthood episode
So the one couple is focusing on adoption
but she referred to a potential situation as "buying a baby" as in "I want to ask her if I can buy her baby." What are your thoughts on this.My first reaction was wtf was this show thinking? They are usually pretty sensitive but I thought this was irresponsible language. As I pondered it more I thought that maybe it was intentional to show how green people are when they start the adoption process (not knowing terms etc). Did anyone else have a response to this?

I didnt see it but plan to tune in from now on to see how the story is developed. People not in the adoption community have no idea of appropriate adoption language so for someone starting out it may seem like just that..."buying a baby".
We'll see if they evolve over the season.

I think it was just showing how desparate she felt at the moment. While it wasn't appropriate, how many of us have been appropriate at all times. I'll continue to watch because I love the show and I want to see how the story unfolds.

It is one of my favorite shows...but I couldn't stand that line, either. Even my DH made a comment about it. I was hoping that they would maybe hire an adoption consulant or something (like they hire Dr.s/medical professionals to help with the medical shows to make sure they are accurate, know the medical terminology) to help with the writing because I'm not a fan of the "language" they are using.

Personally, I can't stand the show. The way they handle the autism story makes my skin crawl. (My son has PDD-Nos). I'm sure I'll feel the same about an adoption storyline.

This week was better, so I'm not really judging much yet... but I can totally see a rich snob like Julia 'joking' about buying a baby. So yes, hard to see if they wanted to stay in character or are just clueless about what's correct... we'll see how it progresses I guess. Totally loved the answer this week though, put her back in her place... for now. I bet she'll change her mind though...
It's true though that I have no idea how accurate the Asperger's storyline is though... it did seem pretty well done to me, but I'm not really familiar with it. |

I had the same thoughts and I'm hoping that they were just going for "realism" and kinda missed the mark.
Fran, DH said the same thing, "You know she'll change her mind!" I'm hoping the coffee girl tells her off because Julia was just getting close to her to get her baby.

I don't watch the show but have heard about this storyline.
Doesn't anyone have an issue of someone approaching and asking if they can adopt the young, single, obviously not rich womens baby? Doesn't that have a worse "ick" factor than the buying a baby statement? Kind regards, Dickons

Will have to see if I can find it online in Canada. Kind regards, Dickons

Yes, it bothered me. That line horrified me and her asking if she would let her adopt her baby really bothered me. Modern Family had a similar line that made my skin crawl, "you could say we're buying American this time."
I do love both shows though. As for the Autism story, that has always touched me. Our son has ODD, and the last show, with the mom going to the playground and watching her son sit alone, and then trying to talk to the teacher and getting blown off...it really hit home for me.

I think the point was that she was buying coffee from the coffee cart and wanted to order a baby. "Can I buy a decaf? Can I buy a danish? Can I buy your baby?" I do not think she was saying it because she is wealthy or because she sees adoption as buying a baby.
Love, love, love this show.

Quote:
Pretty much she wrote down a letter for the girl's landlord to prevent her from being evicted, and the girl told her that if she needs anything, she just has to ask... so she asked 'would you consider letting me adopt your baby?'. The girl gave her the 'I knew you had something in mind for being so nice look' and said 'no'. Although next week it showed that she'll say 'do you wonder why I said no' or something, so yeah it's probably not going to last. I just find they depicted the whole 'rich people feel entitled to anything' mentality well... then to show that they do depend on other people too. |
