Searching for Fathers Parents

He told me the Story of his own life in an Orphanage and how he wished he knew who his own Mother and Father were. Does anyone have any idea how i can obtain this? i vowed to research this after he died but i obtain dead ends. I only have a town, and date My father was born. Nothing else to go by. Thanks for the help in this.
