OT: Pics of Naked Kids = Kiddie Porn?

I read this article today and found it sad but also interesting...glad I only use a digital camera for our naked baby pictures!

They called me a child pornographer - Salon.com

IMO anyone who thinks that toddler naked pictures are child porn are the people who have issues.

But a 8 yo... I can understand that it could be questionable. I think mostly that person made a pretty bad judgment call to take those kinds of pictures to be developed.

playing deveil's advocate here..

naked toddler pictures are kiddie porn - in the hands of someone who finds toddlers sexy. that's the problem
a cute picture of a naked kid sitting on the beach is the equivalent to playboy, in the wrong hands.

The problem has no good solutions. In the advent of digital photography, its too easy for pedophiles to collect innocent pictures and use them for illicit purposes

As a result, laws are passed. But laws are concrete. You can't arrest someone based on how they SEE the pictures. You can only make laws around specific physical entities. SO, laws gets past by well meaning people - no naked under 16 year olds (or 18 year olds)

This results is parents getting charged.. in other kids getting labeled as pedophiles based on shared cell phone pictures.

Was it Ed Meese who described pornography - "I know it when I see it"?

If possession of the kiddie pornography is to be a crime (and not just creation) - as so many are advocating for... Where do you draw the line - an adult in the picture? genitalia close ups? parents are exempt (suggesting no parent ever SA's a child)?

The current laws suck. I agree. But until there's an alternative, this will continue

I think employees need much better training when developing film. Seriously...they called in after developing a picture of a mom breastfeeding? How stupid does one have to be? Sorry, but it's called common sense, which is so lacking in society these days. From the all but nothing laws to people who take months and months to do a simple investigation to the people taking the reports...and on and on.

But since we are indeed over run with rampant stupidity these days, we need to be extra careful not to get in the way. lol!

Meese borrowed it from Potter Stewart. I agree that a little common sense should have prevailed here... it would have saved this family a lot of grief. The person developing the pics should have looked at the entire roll of film to put the pics in context.

But to your point, it's only pornography if its in the hands of someone who is a pedophile.

this is why I don't take pictures of L in the tub....unless she is in a position where I can't see the private areas and it's mostly her face and yes you can tell she's in the tub....or she's wrapped in a towel so no private areas are exposed.

We all have our 'naked baby pictures' but it's not the same as it was back when we were babies.

I have a friend who is a photographer. He will not take pictures of client's babies or toddlers who are naked. He is concerned some nut will accuse him of creating kiddie porn. I think it's sad that people are so dumb to think that a naked baby playing in a bathtub is porn.

I live in Sweden and the attitude towards nudity is much much different. My mother-in-law has taken pictures of my girls that make me feel uncomfortable, I know in the US if shed had them developed she would have been arrested, but they are taken completely in innocence...

The sad thing is the sick people in the world really...

I've taken pictures of my baby's bare butt in the bathtub, but never naked pictures with her private parts showing. I always make sure a washcloth or bubbles is covering her. And I wouldn't do bare butt pictures past 2 or 3.

We've never, ever taken nude pics of our babies...even though they would have been cute and adorable to us, you just never know where they might end up. Things happen.

Like Dannie, we've taken pics in the tub, but absolutely nothing was visible.

I never went naked when I camped as a kid. Maybe, it was because I only camped with my grandparents...in a camper. Also, I guess it could have hurt my chances that we always camped in very public places...KOA campgrounds, for example.

This was back in the eighties, too. I wouldn't even take digital photos of a naked toddler, these days. I'd worry I'd leave the camera somewhere by accident and someone would track me down.

Plus, I plan to adopt a child of no younger age than 5, so this (probably) won't be an issue for me, lol. No skinny dipping for this Mormon boy. LOL.

Same here, although I never thought of the porn thing. I just didn't want him to be embarrassed when he's older.

I feel very bad for the author of this article and his family, but I can't really relate because I can't imagine taking naked pictures of 8 year olds. Or everyone urinating on a campfire! (I'm not really a camping person. LOL)

.

My kids are never naked when we camp either, unless they are changing in the camper. ( I did take a naked picture of baby A when he was running around the camper. It shows his butt, so I printed it at home.)
The people next to us striped their little girl (2yrs) and boy (around 4yrs) and gave them a shower with the hose right where everyone could see. But the mom, dad, and older brothers used the public showers.

Just found this post

I just found this thread and read the article beginning to end. I am a photographer and have often questioned who determines what is appropriate or not when it comes to naked pictures of babies and toddlers. Quite often moms ask me to take shots of them breast feeding their naked newborns. I have had requests for barely clothed pregnant mom with a naked toddler. They almost sound dirty when typed on paper but are amazingly beautiful images. Now that I have children I question what shots I will be willing to take when I start my business back up again. I also question some of the shots I choose to tKe of my own kids. Crazy that we must think like this about innocent photography.

Once when viewing my then foster(now adopted)daughter's lifebook while waiting for court her biological grandfather commented on how many pics of the baby were naked. To me naked is only naked if something is showing- in the case of a baby especially. Her first bath pics were in there, girl parts covered by a washcloth. Some artsy ones of her in a hat box with boas and pearls and cute hats but she had no shirt. She was 6 months old. On the beach with just reusable water diaper on. I felt more creeped out for him that he noticed! I guess now that my girls are 1 1/2 and 3 I am wondering what the line is. I would love tohear more people's opinions.
