New Movie about Adoption: "Mother and Child"
Has anyone seen this movie yet? Only playing in NYC and LA so far, looks interesting but I'm wondering how accurate a depiction of adoption it offers...
Mother and Child Mother and Child | Sony Pictures Classics synopsis: The lives of three different women share a common bond: adoption. Karen (Annette Bening) is a physical therapist who is haunted by the fact that, as a teenager, she gave up her daughter for adoption. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) was raised by adoptive parents and is now a successful lawyer, although her personal life lacks warmth. Lucy (Kerry Washington) and her husband have failed to conceive on their own and are now hoping to adopt another woman's baby to make their family complete. (I apologize if someone else already posted about this, but I searched and didn't see anything on this forum) |

I've read about it and for a change I really want to see an adoption movie. I'm hoping that it portrays things a little more accurately. I'll probably have to wait for it to come out on DVD, but I'm looking forward to that.

I was so proud of J and E for sandbagging the day before to help with the flooding in our state capital. 6/18/2011 Another wedding down. J's nephew got married. We had a great time hanging out with his family and are planning on going back for the 4th. 6/24/2011 I find out my name at birth. I've always wanted to know, another piece of me finally came home! 11/19/2011 We take Kiddo to the Butterfly House. It was pretty cool! I can't believe how fast they grow up. We are planning another visit for February, bowling this time. 11/25/2011 Mom and I go to a bridal shower for my baby brother's fiance. We are NOT cupcake artists. 12/12/2011 Grades are out and I got an A. Sure it was only one class, but it is still an A! LISTEN and SILENT have the same letters. |

I wanted to go see it since I live relatively close to LA....but still can't justify leaving L for a long period of time just so I can have some "me" time that may take more than a couple of hours away from her.
I'll wait for DVD or see if they offer it on Time Warner Cable "on demand". I saw a couple movies through there.

There was an interview with Annette Benning and the director on NPR a few days ago. They were talking more about making the movie and the characters than adoption but it sounded good.

The Filmmaker was interviewed on NPR's Fresh Air yesterday
Fresh Air from WHYY : NPR I found it interesting - and rather enlightening - that he insisted originally, it wasn't a film "about adoption" but is about a forced separation that's caused when a young woman/teenager is forced to place a child and loses contact. Since adoption encompasses so many experiences, "a film about adoption" doesn't tell you much about the movie

Did you watch the trailer on the website I posted, where the adoptive parents are meeting the eMom and the eMom asks if they believe in God? I had a deja vu moment to my own adoption experience, made me want to see it. I realize the movie is not "about adoption" but it sounds like it's definitely a key part of the whole core of the storyline. And it definitely seems to address what is not good about "closed" adoption with the Naomi Campbell/Annette Bening scenario.
Now if I could only manage to get to the movie theater.... ![]() |

The trailer made me cry, the part where Annette states she will see her daughter again and she will forgive her......ugh, it breaks my heart that birthmother's suffer from so much guilt for doing something so selfless. I read a great quote on another forum, a birthmom saying "I didn't give my child away, I gave my child more."
I can't wait to see this movie, I'll be sure to bring a box of tissues with me!! Sorry if my relpy is way off topic... ~jenny |
