Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day is next week and unlike most years where I don't realize it til the day before, this year I'm more aware of it because my 7th grader is working on a project for it.

I am really impressed with his Lang. Arts teacher who doesn't do just a one day activity/assignment for it. He had to interview a Veteran and is now doing an essay, a poster and a poem. They also collected pictures of all the Vets interviewed and during the school day, the pictures will be on a continuous slideshow on all their monitors through out the school. It'll be impressive to see over 200 pictures of all military branches represented.

One great thing about this project for J is he realized just how much a non combat soldier does for our country. Learned a lot and is really putting his best effort into his project.

Anyone else have kids that do things like this? Or just family events/activities to recognize this day and our military?

Crick, my dad is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma (San Diego), CA. Every Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts volunteer their time to decorate the graves with American flags. It means so much to me that these kids give their time to honor my father and others like him who've served their country well.

This year my home community sent 7 WW2 vets on the Honor Flight. It is a state project that flies WW2 vets to DC to see the monument and there is a special ceremony. It would have been 8 but a gentleman died a week before.

We didn't do anything for Veteran's Day when I was a kid because my dad was embarassed by his service (Vietnam), now I know that everyone there goes to the programs. I'm naughty and don't do much because of my work schedule, but I always have a good thought for those that are serving and have served.

1-4-2009 Mom and I visit Kiddo despite the bad weather. He really loved the blue mittens I made him and even helped me plan my living room. Apparently Hot Wheels wallpapper is the way to go.
2-16-2009 I got a promotion, that comes with a raise. Mom and Dad are visiting and we're going to Al's for pie to celebrate.
4-27-2009 Dad surprises me with a Lady Ugly Stick (an awesome fishing rod that is pink) and a 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Battery jacket. I'm a lucky girl!
5-30-2009 Kiddo turns five. It is hard to believe he is that old already, it seems like just yesterday he was being born. I was at peace for the first time on his birthday, what a nice feeling.
6-13&14 2009 A cannon live fire in Casper WY. We got third place and I got to see Devil's Tower for the first time, it was pretty awesome.
7-4-2009 Amelia the kitten comes to live with me and Liz. Talk about jealousy, Liz will adjust though.

One of the neatest things I have seen was when my now 19 year old was in 8th grade. They had to make a poster about a particular vet (most of them used grandparents either dead or alive). The school then attached the posters to stakes and put them on display out in front of the school. There were hundreds of posters. It was really a sight. T did it on his grandpa so when the display was taken down he was able to give it to him.
