Totally OT: Facebook Question

I have a dumb question and I think I might offend some of my facebook friends if I ask them! I am a total novice so there is probably something obvious that I'm just missing.

I have limited patience for Facebook, but I've actually connected with people I went to HS with and extended family I don't see a lot - so it's great from that standpoint. I like seeing everyone's pictures and little messages. But I've been totally avoiding it lately because I get so annoyed with all of the cr**. Like the surveys (Susan took the "What kind of flower are you?" survey. She is a lily!) Or someone had a cow wander onto their farm. Or killed six people in a mafia game. Or "April sent you a virtual heart! Do you accept it?" (huh?) More than half of what appears is that kind of stuff and it makes me crazy! It's like spam, but more obtrusive. Is their any way to "hide" that stuff so that I only see actual messages? I really don't need to know about the sad, brown cow on my cousins "farm."

Please, don't laugh at my stupidity, okay?

It drives me insane too! I just ignore it, but I'd love to be able to block it.

I am so glad you asked this because I have completely stopped looking at Facebook because of all that other 'stuff.' I would love to know the answer too!

Yes there is.

To the right of the message - if you hover your mouse, a "hide" button will appear - you can then pick to "hide" the application (random user sent you a hug, do you accept" kind of crap) or you can elect to hide the users updates all together.

Better yet - when you get one, over on the right side of your news feed - you can select to "Ignore" the app or all apps from certain users.

You can also go here: Login | Facebook and uncheck any "Authorized apps"

But to answer your basic question - yes, you can hide those lame stories about stuff like that, just hover over the update and on the right side, a "hide" button will show and you will have options within that

Good luck

That stuff annoys the crap out of me too! Seriously, I don't have time to sit and send you a virtual heart, even if I do love you! My MIL sends me all that junk and I ignore it all.

Yes! I agree. Truthfully, I would feel a little silly sending you a virtual heart, no matter how much I love you. But now, I don't even have to ignore it. I just went and hid it. This makes me very happy.

I friended a girl from high school the other day (maybe a week ago) and in one day, she sent me something like 30 of those random things...I finally hit the "ignore all application requests from X" button. It was getting out of hand.

One or two a day from the same person - I get. 30? I'm sorry, you need a hobby...or better yet, why don't you send me a request to come help fold my laundry? Clean my bathroom? Something like that? I mean really, the very last thing I need right now (trust me) is a virtual bartender!

Yikes! It sounds like that is her hobby!
A virtual bartender? Really? Is there a point to this that I'm missing? Or is it just a way to annoy someone you haven't seen for 20 years?

Is this on the live news feed part? I rarely visit that page and when I log in, I scan it quickly and then just go to my profile. I don't see that stuff on my profile page.

Or maybe I just don't get gifts...hmm....LOL! You must be very loved and popular Oak!

Try being a bit meaner and you won't get them?

Yeah, I'm just too nice. Can I borrow your stick? A few whacks and I'll give it right back. That ought to take care of the problem!

Crick has made a donation to Oak of 1 purple black striped stick with a silver handle. Do you accept it?

LOL!
