OT: Going car shopping with bmom; recommendations?

Mommy Claire has a bit of money, I have a bit of money and we decided that since she recently got her driver's license that we would go test drive some used cars. (I told her I would put half in as a graduation present from J.C.)

I found a car at a used auto dealership in K.C. that I thought was a decent buy. I ran the VIN on Carfax and the only red flag was that it either has an odometer problem or something b/c the mileage listed isn't accurate. It is a 1999 Misubishi Galant ES sedan listed with 84 thousand some miles. They want $2950 for it. It is fully loaded with a nice clean interior. Since I have always bought my own vehicles with no outside help, I told M.C. I wanted to test drive it and look under the hood of course, for engine appearance, battery check, and hose/belt condition. I also want to inspect the tires.

According to kbb.com they are spot on with the price, actually asking a little under. We only have $2k to spend though altogether plus I know we will need to pay taxes and insurance, but since she wants to leave it at our house until she graduates Job Corps in May, I thought we'd just put liability on it since really no one but her would be driving it and even then only when she comes to visit.

Do you know anyone with a Mitsubishi Galant and if so, how did they like theirs? Overall, on most of the sites I've been on, it has received 4.3 out of 5 stars.

Anyone?

Blessings, Michelle

What makes you think there's something wrong with the odometer? DH works 10 miles from home, and he never goes anywhere else.
If you think there should be more mileage than it shows having, my first thought was that it could have been turned back to show less mileage than what it really has. Otherwise, it's possible it has little mileage on it. Does it look clean and not beat up?
I would also suggest having it looked at by a possible mechanic friend.

Michelle, I would snap that Galant up in a flash if I were you! I love the Mitsubishi Galant and often request one when I'm renting a car out of town.

That's a decent price; in fact, I may go check out a used Galant for myself now, lol.

I dont have any info on the Mitshubishi. But on the mileage error my van had a mileage error as well because it was plain human error. Somebody had written the mileage wrong and then recorded it. So it went into the Carfax history as a mileage error when the mileage was changed back to the original mileage.

Me too! I'm short and the Galant seems to be made just for me. I'm sure tall people are comfortable too though.

Red face

My friend had one. She liked it and it was great in the snow. Her only complaint was the cramped back seat area - a bit uncomfortable for her family.

I definitely wouldn't hurt to have your mechanic check it to make sure it will pass inspection.

As for the mileage - I just bought a van that is only a few years newer than the Galant you are looking at and it only had 23,000 miles. It was owned by an older woman who rarely drove.

Good luck!

Just my luck!!!! I called the dealership today and they sold it last week!!!!

However, he told me they had a lot of new cars come in that were still in our price range. Basically what's on their inventory on their website may not be what they have or may have already sold, so we will go on Friday to check out all the stuff they have.

Drat it all; that Galant was the one I was sure of it! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blessings, Michelle
