Waaaaay OT: privacy hedge suggestions
We have had to take down a dangerously rotted, falling over fence on our back property line. The neighbour that shares that property line with us will not share in the cost to re-fence. We can't afford to do it on our own.
So, we are considering maybe a row of cedars, to offer some privacy. I heard there are some types that grow quickly. I don't want the type that one would keep manicured. More of the thick bushy type that can be left to grow naturally and would offer moderate privacy (as opposed to total privacy). We are in the Plant Hardiness Zone 7A. I also love laurel but am worried it would take a long time to grow up and fill in. Thanks for any suggestions! Janet |

I don't know about your zone, but we have good luck with privet (fast growing), abelia (thick and fast growing) and holly (thick, but not as fast).

I don't have any answers for you, but here is a suggestion that will make you laugh.
Just tell your neighbors that your 600lb great aunt is coming for a visit and she likes to lay out in the backyard in the nude. That might make your neighbors willing to pay for the fence, LOL!
