I am changing careers now. I got laid off last March, and while looking for work decided to go back to school. I worked in IT, made good money, but it was soul-crushingly boring. I am going back to school for another degree, this time in Addictions Counseling.
Unfortunately, I just started, so can't tell you how hard it is. I am finding I love being back in school after having been out for 13 or so years. I always knew I wanted to go back, and use my GI Bill, but never knew what to do. It was a complete epiphany, and can feel for the first time in my adult life, satisfied and content with what I am doing. Good luck to you!! ![]() |

I didn't go to college till my son was in second grade. I went to school and got an AA at a local Jr college, then a BA with Liberal Arts major-centering around child/teaching classes at a State University, then a teaching credential for primary grades. It was difficult starting to go to school after being out of school for so long.
Anyway, after 6 years of college, there were no schools hiring around here, so I substituted. A job offer came up at a phone company, so I applied and took the job. It's high sales. I never thought I would do good at sales, but in the 11 years I've been here, I've been recognized 5 of those years in my state and nationwide for being in the top 10% for sales and service. Being in school at a later age gave me a wealth of information to use. I think I appreciated it more than I would have if I had gone to school earlier in life. But, yes, both changing to go to school after so long a break was an adjustment. And changing what I thought my career path would be was also an adjustment. But, no matter what skill you have, or what you've been to school for, those things with your life experiences are drawn upon for the new career choice. Nothing is lost.

I went back at the age of 43 and got my MSW. Best thing I ever did.

I wll be interested to hear the replies you get. I am seriously considering going back myself. Sort of even considering going to med school or getting an MSW and joining an adoption agency.

Law to Education
I got my law degree in 2002, practiced for 3.5 years- hating every moment of it. I went back to school to get a PhD in Educational Policy. When I graduate in May I'll teach at a University and do Ed. Policy research.
I have never been happier. And the swich was easy for me, law school and "lawyering" kept me in practice for scholatic pursuits so I was ready for the PhD curriculum. (Granted Law and Policy are not that different...but being a lawyer vs being a professor is very different.) I love my job. |

thank you.. I am so confused.. I have MBA and I have not been able to use it what so over. I have been out of school since 2003. I am so confused right now.. I am looking into doing biologogy so I can do research.. Also I was thinking about Actuaries.. Then I saw you have to do exam and the chances of getting a job is better if you dont fail the exam more than one time.. Man, why can I just win lotto and just cruise around the world.. lol
