A Bug Flew WAY In My Ear and I Went Crazy (and then I went to the ER)

Who knew a bug could really fly in your ear and make you panic? Felt like it was going to eat my brain and I LOST it. Drove myself to the ER crying and trying to squish my ear so it would stop moving around but of course so far in.....

They helped me with E and my car, drowned the bug, calmed me down and irrigated but couldn't get it all out.

It was pretty horrific! DH met me there in a panic because in MY panic he couldn't understand me and why we were going to the ER. It was high drama.

BTW they told me at the ER that everyone flips out.... so not just me BUT Ethan really saw me lose it and I hope it doesn't leave an emotional scar or something! I mean I was hysterical!

This ever happen to anyone?

Yes it happened to me 2 years ago... We were just going to sleep (it was like 11pm), and I heard a moth, then felt something weird and it was in my ear, flapping like crazy. Dh thought I was crazy and didn't believe me... then said 'well, you can go to the doctor tomorrow'. Seriously???

So we went to the ER, and they drowned it and got it out with tweezers... we came home at 1am or something... and we got a $50 bill in the mail. I stopped panicking after a while though, even if bugs usually gross me out... but yeah it's quite the experience. Even the doctor that took it out was grossed out... Still no idea how a moth managed to go through my hair and into my ear!

Glad you are better! I feel for you!!!

Thanks for responding guys, the ER doc said it was very inflamed (that's why he left part in there), gave me some ear drop anti biotics and said I should call an ENT on Monday and get seen either way. Fun.

he kept calling it "the beast" he was pretty funny, he said some kind of fly.

It felt like some kind of bird in there to me!

The good news is, now that you've read this you will know if it ever happens to you? They cannot fly into your brain....apparently there is a membrane they cannot cross in the inner ear. I wish I knew that before! Because probably without realizing it, that is what I was so scared of!

I still can't believe I did the crazy dance in front of E!

Moth in the ear

This happened to my mom a few years ago. We were just in the house and BOOM out of NOWHERE a moth (apprently with eye problems lol) flew into my moms ear. SHE FLIPPED OUT. She knew that there was something in her ear but didn't know what. She heard it flapping it's wings and she went nuts. I had read before that if you get a month in your ear to put a flashlight up to your ear in the dark and they will fly to it. My mom thought I was just being funny and mocking her, but she lay down on the couch and I put a flashlight up to her ear and could see part of the moth. So I turned out the lights and left the flashlight up to her ear. It took a while, but the little bugger worked himself out!!

My cousin was sleeping and a lady bug crawled into her ear. She said you could feel it crawling around!

My brother was working under a car in the evening and a moth flew into his ear. He did the dance, too. When he went to the ER, they were able to get it out, but had some difficulty with the fuzzy stuff it left behind.

That was probably 4 or 5 years ago and his eyes still bulge out whenever he talks about it. He also gets very mad at anyone if they laugh when he's telling the story.

He said it hurt like crazy.

The only place bugs like to fly into with me is my nose.

Yeah, a fly up the nose is pretty interesting. But at least they can get back out!

Oh Storm, how frightening. This is not as uncommon as you would think. I remember being in a Howard Johnston resturaunt a long time ago(Are these even around anymore?) and a woman was sitting there and all of a sudden went hysterical freaking out holding her ear. Same thing. I don't think that would be pleasant at all, even water in my ear drives me nuts. I am glad it is over and I am sure E won't be traumatised.

Oh my goodness!! So very sorry. Yes, scary!! And I know Ethan is just fine.

If it makes you feel any better, my sister had a GIANT wood roach in her underpants when we were kids. OMG!
