OT - Flying on Sept. 11th

Would any of you be scared to ever fly on September 11th?

No. Flying in general worries me but I'm not worried about that as much as the fact that my husband takes the train into Grand Central Station in Manhattan every day and works in midtown.

I watched the buildings fall from my roof on Sept. 11. Maybe that made it more real for me. I was stuck in my apt for a week, gave blood, was covered in that white "dust" .... to me the date doesn't mean as much as the actual memory of the event.

No. No 'one' date is safer (or less safe) than any other day. If something is going to happen, it's going to happen. If it's not going to happen, it's not going to happen. Worrying or choosing alternative dates doesn't increase anyone's odds.

THREE CHILDREN HAVE STRANGLED TO DEATH SINCE ANGEL DIED ON 8/11/09.
Brandyn Coppedge died on 9/11/09. Rosie Smith died on 9/30/09 and Thapelo Kwofie died on 11/1/09. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is no longer recommending safety kits. They are now recommending that anywhere children live or visit should be free of corded window products.

I suppose you're right. I guess I'm thinking certain dates might be more appealing to terrorists.

Terrorists are opportunists. And it's nearly impossible to get into their heads and decide what they will do. They've picked dates throughout the year and in countries all over the world.

I think people are tempted to pick a date in order to feel some kind of control over their safety while in the air. However, you can't control what will happen.

The chances of another September 11th are very slim. MOST of the airline crashes since then were caused by birds, malfunctions, pilot error, etc.

So far, in 2009, aviation safety database has 74 flight's down. Of those, most did not involve a lot of fatalities. The ones that had more than 20 deaths were NOT caused by terrorists.:

Brazil: 2/7/09: 24 fatalities
Canada: 2/12/09: 49 fatalities
Indonesia: 4/6/09: 24 fatalities
Indonesia: 5/20/09: 97 fatalities
France: 6/1/09: 216 fatalities
Yemen: 6/30/09: 152 fatalities
Iran: 7/15/09: 168 fatalities

Most were from poorer countries that may not have the same standards in maintenence. Several accidents were due to weather conditions or pilot error.

As for terrorist hijackings, we are safer now than we were in the 70's and 80's. There were 68 hijackings in the 70's. That dropped to 52 in the 80's and down to 21 in the 90's. Even with the flights from 9/11, the new decade has only had 10 hijackings in the last 9 years.

There are also approximately 5000 commercial flights in the air at ANY GIVEN MOMENT and 64 million worldwide in a year. So the odds of it being your flight are slim on ANY date.

Thanks for those facts-I hate to fly. I don't why but the older I get the worse my fear is. However, I would not be anymore afraid to fly on 9/11 than any other day.

Yeah I had to get over some hard core terrorism induced anxiety and what helps me the most is realizing i'm not the center of the universe

Seriously, it's a numbers game, I mean what are the odds?

I couldn't agree more!

Storm, we "lived" it too....I gotta admit, though, I am really happy that hubby doesn't commute into NYC anymore.

I would not be afraid to fly on Sept. 11 because I doubt future terrorist events will be on planes. They've already done that. There are so many other twisted ways to scare/injure people.

However, Sept. 11 was not a randomly chosen date. I can't remember the specifics and can't find the answer via google, but I saw a documentary that said the date was chosen because of another event that happened on Sept. 11. Wish I could remember what the event was.

Sorry to bring that into your consciousness.

Thanks, Ladies!

Truth be told, I'm scared to fly on any given day of the year! It just happens that we are planning to book a trip that will probably leave on Sept. 11th.

There are so many dates that events happen on that I would not think twice about flying on 9-11 just like I don't think twice about walking into the school that I work at on April 20 (Columbine High School).

Of course I live with the thought in mind that my days are numbered and when it is time it is time.

I thought I would be, when I had to fly out of the county for business on 9/11/2002, but I was not. There was a somber mood to the airport and it was very eerie and sad, but I wasn't scared. I felt like the security was excellent.
