O/T eating out when on a diet?

Ok, I have been on a pretty strict diet and have done good all week; I have lost 4lbs and hubby has lost 5lbs. We are NOT wanting to go overboard, but are wanting to go out to eat. I have been looking online at diff. menu's and everything has SO many calories!!! Any suggestions for eating out when on a diet???

Split an entrée or immediately ask for a box when your meal arrives put half aside to take home. Skip the bread; eat a salad with the dressing on the side. Make up your mind before hand if you’re going to eat dessert so you can save room for it.

Nothing fried, order grilled or broiled-fish is usually a great choice.
Skip the bread and potatoes, order steamed veggies and a salad.
Split the entree or get a to go box immediately and set half aside.
Decide what you want to order before you go so you can avoid the temptation on the menu.
Avoid sweet alcoholic drinks and soda.

What I actually do though for an occasional meal out is eat what I've been craving. If you've been doing good all week a little treat will not hurt you. Also once you've been eating healthy for awhile, you will not be able to eat a big fattening meal.

I've learned to order what you want to eat and not what's on the menu -- e.g., a favorite "safe" meals is to ask for a plain broiled chicken breast with a baked potato (butter on the side), steamed vegetable and a side salad (dressing on the side). Order oil and vinegar dressing, as a good choice (side). This is rarely on a menu but most restaurants will be glad to help if you say you are on a special diet. Controlling portion size, glazes and breadings, salad dressing and issues like that can be so hard with "menu items". Best of luck! susan

I too am dieting. I'm on Jenny Craig, but Applebees has menu suggestions that fit into the Weight Watcher's diet program. There are actually several selections including desert. Its all in the portions. Go for it. Even if you go off diet this one night, just up your activity tomorrow and get right back on task.

I try to opt for salads that maybe have some grilled chicken in them and not a lot of other fattening ingredients (i.e. cheese, sour cream, etc.). I get the dressings on the side and just lightly dip my fork in the dressing before taking the salad so I can get some of the flavor but not gobs of dressing.

I also like chicken or fish grilled with steamed veggies on the side. I ate potatoes on my diet (WW), but just made sure to count the points and did not overload with butter/sour cream. Eating half and taking home half is also a good option.

What is also good to keep from overeating is to order a cup of soup (not a cream soup, but broth based) before your meal. I've read that you will eat less overall if you start with a soup, and it does work. Just don't have the bread/butter that comes with it!

Diabetic

Hiya,

I was recently diagnosed as diabetic and given a list of what I couldn't eat. Bread and other starches were right at the top of the list.

If you have a hankering for fast food, I think Chik-Fil-A is the best bet for Diabetics. The whole grain (or close enough to it) bread allows for a tasty sandwich without a lot of starchy food. Just don't get the waffle fries, way too tasty and it is hard to stop eating them. LOL.

David

PS. I don't know what the calorie count is for the food, but eating there has never caused my sugar to shoot up like a burger place would.
