OT: Carpet or Wood?
Hi,
I was just wondering your thoughts...I am "patiently" waiting for my brother to move out before our home study on the 26th. Hopefully he will be out before the end of next week. We are going to paint and do the floor...Silly question coming up! Last year we put in wood (faux) in the spare bedroom and I really like it. However, I was thinking for the baby's room that carpet would be better, more comfy. Just wanted your thoughts, as this will be our first child, I do want to make the right choice. Thanks! |

It's really your choice. I always had carpet. One warning, if the child has allergies you could find yourself pulling up the carpet since it is much harder to remove dust from carpet. (It's scary how filthy old carpeting is, even if you shampoo/steam clean it regularly!

Personally, I would stay with wood. I have had to clean so much vomit (reflux and mspi) and formula and medicine out of our carpet, it'll never be the same. Wood would be so much easier. If you want it a little more comfy, what about a nice big area rug?

I would put carpet. If you put wood, you'll probably want an area rug, and they are harder to clean around and vaccum.

Wood wood wood! I am wood floor girl and there are many terrific baby rugs on the market that are machine washable. This is mine (it also comes in lots of colors):
Shaggy Raggy Cream Rug : PoshTots We vacuum his floor a couple of times a week, mop it once a week and shake out the rug outside and once a month we wash it in the machine. I don't think anything beats the charm of wood or "wood" floors!

wood all the way!
As a parent of lots of kids (bio, adopted, foster) and lots of ages (right now 13 months to 13 years), I cannot tell you how much I love wood floors! Things get spilled, diapers fail... our not-100%-potty-trained dogs have accidents.... As the kids get older their spills get bigger and worse (some times). Wood is WAY easier to clean and (IMHO) looks so nice! We live in a beautiful, 80 y.o. home and have been refinishing and resealing the floors a little at a time and they look beautiful and can take a lot! Dirt is easier to see and easier to clean up. We do have a few area rugs in some of the rooms and I don't find them difficult to clean.

I vote "wood", too! For all of the above reasons. I'd do an area rug as well.

We have wood as well and love it. I put down the colored play tiles. Those are so cushy-I even go in there to work out when I can. They are super easy to clean also.

Stormster... umm...do I get that rug along with his posh tots bedding? I'm a total wood floor person too. We put in Bamboo in both the "kids" rooms and I have the Trellis Area rug from Pottery Barn for Ty's room. It's a low dense pile, so it's easy for Roomba. Otherwise, get a machines washable one like Stormster said!

Wood is especially good now that we are potty training.
We have an indoor/outdoor rug that we take out and hose off if we need to.And now that we have a little one that may have allergies, we are happy we don't have carpet.

Wood, I totally wish I could afford to put down wood in my whole house right now. Between DH, mine, and DD's allergies and the cat hair (and messes), I would be so happy with wood.

We have both wood and carpet in our house and they both have pros and cons.
One thing I like about carpet is that its soft and people are more likely to sit/lay on the foor to watch T.V., play games and etc. This works well for us because we live in a 850 sq. ft. condo. We simply don't have enough room for a very large sofa, loveseat and armchair. The downfall is that carpet takes more work to clean and it can hold odors if your don't take care of it. With our wood floors, its much easier to clean and it doesn't hold odors. The downfall to wood is the fact it makes our condo echo alot and its extemely cold to walk on. Another thing to worry about is the wood warping. Our neighbor went on a 6 week vacation with her husband and while she was gone her pipes bursted all over the floor and ruined their beautiful (and expensive) wood. They ended up replacing it and it wasn't cheap either. ETA: Check out this web site FLOR modular carpet tiles - Create unique, eco-friendly area rugs, runners & wall-to-wall designs . They have a good selection of carpet that you can put on top of your current wood floors without taking them up. Whenever your change your mind, you can simply get rid of the carpet squares. We have this in our home because it was very expensive to replace the wood floors in our rooms.
