What and how much of it does your toddler drink in a day?

Joshie is refusing plain milk; I mean, he is pushing it away and asking for his Carnation Instant Breakfast flavored milks. I've been letting him have his way thinking milk is milk, but I'm upping the other calcium-enriched foods in place of it. He loves Sunny D and I buy the calcium enriched kind of it.

He also loves tea, sweet or unsweet. And it has to have ice in it too, like mine. Other than that and water at bedtime, that is all he is drinking. He absolutely won't drink juice any more.

Is this just a phase ?????

Blessings, Michelle

You could try Boost Kid Essentials drinks. They have chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. The each contain 100 % RDA of Calcium and other nutrients for kids.

DD does not drink juice either. I've tried giving it to her a couple of times but she absolutely refuses it. She drinks multiple glasses of plain milk throughout the day with water here and there.

E drinks about 20 oz of rice milk (fortified with calcium and vitamins) and he used to only drink water (probably about 12 oz?) but I've been reading that juice helps with iron absorption when given with food and he finally likes it.

He LOVES gatorade too. I'm not sure it's good for him but I always have it in the car and after the park sometimes it's all I've got! OT but anyone know if Gatorade in moderation is ok for a toddler?

The problem with gatorade is it is pretty high in sodium. Vitamin water has electrolytes without the added sodium.

Storm, just don't get the herbal Vitamin Water. I'm really leary about giving gurana or whatever else they put in some of those to a toddler.

The only way DD will drink milk is if it's chocolate. We put 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon of ovaltine in 4-6 oz of milk. She also likes juice but not so much out of a sippy cup. She will drink the little 4 oz Gerber bottles because she opens it herself so I just buy a big bottle and refill those.

She drinks water only if I give it to her in a little Dixie cup or if it's my plain carbonated water.

My DD drinks a regular milk in the morning sometimes we will give her chocolate milk to change it up, and pretty much water the rest of the day. I will try to give her apple juice (doesn't like juice).....lemonade every once in a while (crystal light).

All three of my kids drink aton of water......always asking for more. I wish I was good at giving myself that much water. HEHEHE!

Our DD drinks Pediasure, and has water as well. We don't give her juice at all (though they do at daycare sometimes grrrrr!). We plan on avoiding caffeinated drinks for as many years as we can

Not sure how much of the RDD of calcium Carnation Instant Breakfast has compared with regular milk. Have you checked the container?

I really wouldn't be too upset if he refuses juice. Water is probably better for him anyway.

Fadzi don't you think some organic unsweetened juice at meals is a little better than just water?

I am lucky that DS LOVES water, but his diet is so limited I feel like he needs that extra bit of fruit juice.

Our DD is 14 months. She gets 16-20 ounces of whole milk each day, 4 ounces of juice in the morning (helps keep her regular ), and then the rest is water. She sometimes goes through two 8 ounce cups of water in a day. When she is thirsty, like after a trip to the park, she gets water.

Maybe you want to try yogurt/cottage cheese/string cheese/ice cream to replace some of the calcium he is missing from milk.

Fadzi -- We struggle with daycare too. We remind them everyday that Samantha should get water in the afternoon, not juice.

Our ped told us at two she didn't care if DD ever drank milk again, but to make sure she got her calcium in cheese, yogurt and other stuff. Ped also told us Water is the best thing (fruit juices usually have sugar). I really push the water because I want her to like it. Unfortunatly my husband is the only water drinker in our family and we are all tryin to get to that point. Of course we have caught DD more than once hidding in a dark room sucking the bottom out of a route 44 coke. lol

DS drinks milk with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The rest of the day he drinks ice water. Very rarely I let him have some lemonade or juice, but I water that down too. I figure he doesn't need to extra sugar from either and since he LOVES fruits and veggies he doesn't need to extra vitamins from juice either. The pediatrician said it is fine for him to drink mostly water throughout the day.

Storm, I have always believed (and been taught) that juice contains unnecessary calories. Then again, I'm sure ice cream has unnecessary calories as well, but at least they are not all carbohydrate in origin.

For us, water is best. DD loves her "agua". We once tried to give her (diluted) apple juice for constipation, and she wasn't a fan. She has had 100% fruit popsicles once or twice, but like with the juice, she refused them after a few tries. She really does prefer water (which is great).

Don't quote me on the reliability of this website, but on a quick search, this is what I found:

HookedOnJuice.com :: Sugar and Fruit Juice Nutrition Information Facts

I'm sure you can find sites that say the contrary. Juice won't be kill anyone, but I do worry about dental health, and prefer allowing her to gain more calories in the form of fats and proteins.
