big baby, just sharing.. oh and a hip click
Our little girl went to the doc yesterday for her 2 month well check. She's 9 weeks old and she weighs 12.10 lbs and is almost 24 inches. She is in the 90th percentile for both weight and height. At birth she was a good size, 7.15 lbs. Personally I think it's great, I love having a sturdy little baby. Plus she sleeps through the night, she's a dream. But sometimes I feel strange at the doctor's office like we're doing something to cause her to be so big. Do any of you have big babies? if so, do you ever feel this way? As a foster parent, all of our foster babies have all been very small. This is my first experience with a big baby. It's so different to have her outgrowing her 0-3 month clothes before she's even 2 months old. Or moving her into size 2 diapers so soon, but it is what it is.
The doc also said that she detected a small hip click in her right hip and wants her to have an ultrasound. I don't like that. If her hips aren't developing properly she may have to wear a brace to help correct it. Anyone have experience with this?

Count me in as a member of the "Big Baby Club"!!!! At 2 months old, my older son was 12lbs,14oz and 23 3/4 inches.....he was 7lbs, 20 inches at birth. Our younger son was 14lbs,12oz at 2mos old and 23 1/4 inches.....he was 8lbs5oz at birth and 21inches.
As you know, all babies grow differently. Now at 5.5yo, my older son is tall and lean. The little guy is 2.5yo and is very short for his age and husky. It all evens out, that's for sure! But people always used to comment on how big my boys were, what was I feeding them, etc. Personally, I love a chubby baby!!! And their rolls at 2mos were adorable! |

She sounds a lot like my DD. She was also 7 lbs 15 oz at birth and was in the 90th-95th percentile for height and weight up until her 15 month check up. Now she's 90th for height and 50th for weight. She was always very lean though so I usually just got comments about how long she was.
For me it wasn't weird because big babies are a norm in my family. My sister's son at 4 months old weighed 19.5 lbs...he was only 4 lbs less than my 15 month old. He just turned 6 months and is wearing 12 month clothing. Needless to say he's off the charts! Believe it or not, he also started out at 7 lbs 15 oz.

I've got a BIG baby, too!
I've got a chunky little boy boy here. He was 7 pounds at birth but by his 2-month check-up , he was 12 1/2 pounds... at 4 months , he was 16 1/2 pounds... and at 6 months, he was 19 1/2 pounds. My little guy is now 8 months old and he wears 18-mo clothes. He has chubby checks and cute little rolls all over but now that he is starting to move around more (and down to 4 bottles a day), he is beginning to lose his chubby baby look a little bit.
My older son was a preemie and took many months to even appear on the charts for weight. He is 7 now and has consistantly been in the 50% for years. I had no experience with a baby that was so "big". I even went as far as to talk to the pediatrician and ask if I was over feeding the baby and he just laughed at me! Rest assured -- your baby is eating good and growing at her own pace and that is what really matters! But ya just gotta love those chubby babies!! ![]()

Our second boy had the hip click so we saw a pediatric orthopedic doctor who ordered the ultrasound. It confirmed that the ball of the femor was popping out of socket. So he had to wear a brace for 6 weeks. It was like a hard foam diaper. We could take it off for bathing and diapering. After the 6 weeks they did another ultrasound and it was fine. He will have follow up in 6 months. It was not that bad just made cuddling difficult.

My boys have been big also. We were told as long as the percentiles are close for height and weight, we are doing great! (So you don't want 5th percetile for height and 90th for weight! As long as they are within about 25% they are right on!)
My son also had an ultrasound for his hips. They did not find anything. My experience has been that both pediatricians we have had tend to err more on the side of caution and order tests for even a small concern since we have very limited family history. So we have had quite a few times where we had tests that showed nothing. I am okay with that though because I would rather get it checked and know it is fine!

My oldest who is now 11 was 8lbs 14oz and 21 1/2 inches at birth. She is now 5'1 and 95lbs. She has always been a big kid; she is not heavy though. I like big babies; makes me feel like I am doing something right. They all tend to slim down once they start walking so don't worry!
My son is our smallest; he was only 5lbs and 18 1/4 inches at birth. At 2 he is only 25lbs. |

Our little boy is also a big baby - he is 7 months and weighs 20 pounds. I get somewhat annoyed when I get the comment, "Oh, Mommy must be feeding you too much!" or "Wow - you're a big one! What is your Mommy feeding you, steak?" I get it all the time.
Try not to let it bother you. As long as the doctor says your baby is healthy, that's fine. I think it's natural for parents to be a little uneasy with both situations - large or small for his/her size. All babies are unique and have their own unique body shape and weight. I know I feed my baby less than what some other people I know feed their babies and they are still smaller than him. It is just the way he is supposed to be. However, it can be hurtful to get the comments. Oh, I also get the, "Oh, you have a FAT baby!" comment every so often too. Ugh. I just let it slide. He is just perfect the way he is, and so is your baby! |

Just went to pedi today and baby boy is 14.2 lbs and he's just 10 weeks old! He's 95th %tile for height and weight. He was 7lbs 14oz at birth.
Hope the hip turns out to be fine!

My youngest son has always been big too. Currently 95th percentile for weight and 90th for height. He will be two in September but size 3T is already getting a little snug on him. I love his big size. He eats a wide variety of foods and I'm confident he gets a pretty good balance of nutrition. My smaller (older) son on the other hand totally stresses me out because he tends not to eat enough and is so picky. So bigger is definitely easier for me in the feeding department.
I wonder if anyone else notices their "big kids" getting treated as though they are older? It seems like most people are justifiably surprised when they learn how young my son is. And I'm a little worried that will translate to unreasonable expectations as he gets older. People may see him as immature even though he acts his age. I guess I can always find something to worry about! ![]()

I think I may have you all beat. My oldest son, now 21 was 9lbs 4oz and 24 inches long. At one year he was 30 lbs and wore a size 3T. I do not remember how tall he was, but lets just say he was not fat, even on the skinny side. He is now 6'8" and weighs 240 lbs.
My son always had people thinking he was older than he was. People looked at me funny when he was not potty trained at 2 because he looked like he was at least 5. They spoke to him as if he was a much older child. I think some may have thought he was special needs when he didn't respond like they thought he should. It was a little annoying...but we don't sweat the small stuff. |

Yeah! I get to join the big baby club.
DD was 10lbs. 5 oz at birth. By three months she weighed 14 lbs and was 26 inches long! Her length wasn't even on the charts. My son, who was a micro preemie, didn't hit 14 lbs until he was a year old. What a difference. Her first mom just has a tendency to have large babies. Her bio brother is now just average sized so I expect that she will slow down in her growth sooner or later. I do enjoy my chunky princess. |

Oh my gosh! I absolutely LOVE reading all of the replies!!! And what all of you have said is absolutely true. The comments are annoying and I think that many people do think they are older. I'm guilty of that as well. When Alanna was born there was a baby visiting a family member and he was in a stroller. Seriously, I thought he was like 2 years old or something and I overheard the mom saying that people always think he's older than he is. I asked her how old he was an he was only 8 months!! He was gigantic to me and I went on about how big he was. I probably irritated that poor mom to death. Now I know.....

I don't like that. If her hips aren't developing properly she may have to wear a brace to help correct it. Anyone have experience with this?
