OT - Wilton Cake Decorating

First cookies, now cakes!

In my attempt to quiet my OCAD (thanks aclee!) I have signed myself up for Course 1 of the Wilton Cake Decorating classes!

I'm totally intimidated and get discouraged easy, but I really want to learn how to make those beautiful, funky cakes like you see on Ace of Cakes!

I think there's a total of three courses. They begin on July 6th and I will post pics of my "progress" for anyone interested in seeing them!

Has anyone here ever taken any of the courses?

They used to do them at the JCPenny's I worked at in college. Its something I always wanted to try! Digital scrapbooking is another good time filler if you are looking for a hobby (that will be useful when you have a baby).

I have taken 4 Wilton courses. They get harder and more labor intesive as you go, but are so worth it. I had a really good time taking them and love to do cakes for friends and families birthdays etc. Depending upon how "in" to it you get, it can get to be an expensive hobby. Have patience - the more you practice the better you get, and in many instances it's not as hard as it looks.

Have Fun, can't wait to see some pictures!

Thanks for the encouragement!!

I hope the class stays small. I have a feeling I will be requiring a lot of individual instruction..........

A group of my co-workers took the classes and a couple of them actually teach it now. They got to some pretty fancy ones at the end of the course - mostly using the fondant frosting which gives them a really smooth surface. It looks like a lot of fun!

Heart

Yes! I have only done the Wilton brownie class, but my mom and sister just got done making wedding cakes for their Wilton class. They have done all the cake classes except for gum paste and more fondant, which is next. They have made some beautiful, beautiful cakes and really enjoyed it. Their instructor is very nice and very helpful, as english is my sister's third language.

I can't bake (or cook or even toast bread), but I would be a great person for you to sample your "test cakes" on...haha!! Enjoy! I am so jealous of people who can do stuff like this!

I would love to do something like that! Learn how to make little flowers or big fancy things with frosting too! I don't know if my little rural area offers anything like that, but I think I will check into it!

Blessings, Michelle

Looks awesome! Are you enjoying it? My mom and sister just finished the final class-gum paste and fondant I think. Kinda disappointed. I do love cake.

I am a cake decorator - google cake decorating classes and you might find a local bakery offering classes, if so then SKIP the Wilton, they teach you the absolute most time consuming way. But if that is all you have then it is a fun way to get into it, it's mostly practice. Enjoy!
