It is a long story so I'll give you the short version. Lawyer didn't realize the birthfather consent was missing until six months after our son was born. Then they couldn't locate the birthfather and it took an additional 10 months for the birthfather search to be completed. Sprinkle in an additional 4 months of general incompetence and voila!

It's ridiculous that it took two years to finalize this adoption. Congrats that it's finally over!

Congratulations! Our story was very similar - having to track someone down and basic incompetence. We were promised that we would finalize before Christmas, and it was the end of March before it happened.

Not to scare you - but, the day we showed up for court our lawyer told us (in the hall outside the courtroom), that she didn't have all the paperwork. We appeared in front of the judge and gave our testimony, then left with a promise that she would "wrap it up quickly." The day we had been waiting for ended up being a huge let down. A month of unreturned phone calls later, we got the finalization in the mail. Still waiting on BCs...sigh.
