Car Seat Safety Story (Car Accident)

I just wanted to share my story from this past week. My daughter was born on May 1 of this year, and officially placed with us on May 15 (TPR signed!!!!). On May 19, DH suggested we walk to the grocery store, so we strapped DD into her carseat then into her stroller and took off. On the way home a 92 year old woman driving a big old caddy took a left hand turn and drove straight into us. DH and I went down and the stroller went flying across the street, hit a curb and tipped onto its handlebar. There are no words to explain the feeling of watching your child be hit by a car and the stroller go flying. This is a long story but essentially because DD was strapped so securly into her stroller and car seat she was unharmed. The stroller (BOB Revolution) was totalled, but I truly believe had it been anything else she might have been seriously hurt. DH and I were not hurt badly just bruised pretty bad. the old lady was going about 15 mph when she ran into us. So the moral of my story is, even if you are just taking a short trip around the block or neighborhood, make sure you strap your child securly into the carseat or stroller you never know what might happen.

We feel incredibly lucky that nothing worse happened. DD spent the night in the PICU under observation because she was only 19 days old. She is doing great though and we feel very blessed.

How scary for you! So glad you are all fine and that your baby's carseat saved her life even though she wasn't in the car! Not the kind of accident you expect a car seat to go through, but so glad it worked properly!

Just reading your words made me sick to my stomach!

Thank you for sharing and reminding us all how important it is to take any and all safety precautions we can - even when we might not think it is necessary!

Hug and kiss that baby for us all!

Oh yes, the woman was cited, and we are working on making sure her license is revoked. I am pretty certain she will never drive again, but I still want to make sure she doesn't have a license. It was an unfortunate incident that we hope will be a reminder to all how important safety is.

It just so happened my DD was the most popular girl in the ER and PICU, all the nurses wanted to take care of a 'healthy' baby.

My DH and I are not as sore as we were last week, so I think we are all on the mend.

I am still sort of reeling over this story!!! Thank god you 3 are all right.

I'd like to take the time to remind everyone to please help elderly relatives be responsible with driving..
a 19 day old couldve been killed here.
I had an elderly patient a few years ago... I called dmv and revoked his license months prior to the incident (he had early dementia) and his daughter who lived nearby told him not to drive but didn't take his keys.
He hit somebody going the wrong way on a divided street and causing an injury accident.
Even though the authorities revoke the license, basically whoever is closest to the person has to take steps to stop them from driving or they could continue and really hurt or kill somebody.
(I know if the time ever comes when I have to stop my dh husband from driving, it'll be heck!!)
OK off my soapbox now, glad you are all OK, have a good memorial day!!

It was a Graco Snugride 32 and the stroller was a bright orange BOB Revolution. I highly recommend that stroller.

OMG! I'm SO glad that your baby is ok! I can't even imagine.

Make sure her insurance replaces that car seat. Once a child restraint has been in an accident it is no longer usable.
