OT: So maybe I won't be a "soccer mom" after all

DD had her first soccer "practice" yesterday. After fighting with DH over whether she needed cleats (please -- this is soccer for 3-5 year olds, moron, not the World Cup!), we took her. I of course saw her run on the field and got verklempt.

The first thing she did was hold hands with another little girl....Coach said, "No hand holding in soccer!" hahah. While she dribbled the ball a bit, she kept running back to DH and me. She then went out and started playing Ring Around the Rosey with her new girl friend prompting Coach to say, "No ring around the rosey in soccer!" Few more drills, then running back to us, sitting down next to me and saying, "Mama, I am going to sit here and watch the clouds."

They had a scrimmage game where DD was more interested in picking up the dandelions. At the end, she was upset that she didn't get to kick the ball and asked her Dad: "Next week, Dad, you will go on the field and tell the other kids to stop so that I can get my turn at the ball!" Somehow, I think she is missing the concept, but she did look so cute in her soccer jersey!

LOL! We had my almost 4 year old in it. One practice. He was way better than the other kids at the skills. I was all proud of how totally awesome my kid is and then they started a scrimage. You know the little beehive thing where its baiscally a free for all? DS LOST it. He was beyond upset that people were not taking turns. To make matters worse, DH had convinced him he could be the goalie. No goalie's in baby soccer. We spent a few days trying to convince DS that everything was not about sharing. That the POINT was to steal the ball. He didn't last 2 minutes during the game before he lost it. I think we will be waiting a few years if we ever try again!

I totally feel your pain.

ROFL! How cute, Karen! We're planning on our DD playing soccer as well, so I guess we'll hold our breath until then...

Aw Love, thanks for sharing. I can't believe how old DD is! My one season of "playing soccer" was very similar, and I was darn cute in my jersey!

Hope you took pics

I never played soccer, but have gone to MANY of my nieces and nephews games....we've had a LOT of dandelion pickers, cartwheelers, and cloud watchers - but very few soccer players haha

Ditto on the pictures!

Seriously- one of the cutest things to me is a little todler playing soccer! It's so funny. How adorable. That reminds me of a movie -- ugh can't remember the name. Rodney Dangerfield (sp??) is a stepdad to a teenage boy that's interested in soccer. Rodney's character has to coach a girls soccer team for work... none of the girls are very good & one is more interested in butterflies!!! Ugh- wish I could remmeber the name - gonna drive me crazy now THat reminded me of it though.

I bet she was adorable!

Tmom, glad to hear she is not alone!! She does another photo op coming up....her ballet recital! I'd like to say she is a prima ballerina, but um....not yet!! (You will have to coach her!)

Steph, was it called LadyBugs? That was too cute.

Tmom, they are dancing to a song called "Suzy Snowflake" and wearing this white costume with feathers. To say DD looks "dazzling" in it is an understatement! Now if she will just get on the stage, do a little something something, and not sit down and suck her thumb!

I just signed my four year old up for soccer. We have had several practices a few games. DS enjoys it. He is only four and is not that good yet, but he does run after the ball. He is not really being aggressive as to really trying to get the ball away from the other boys, I think that takes time.

He has run off the field a few times with his lips puckered to give me a kiss. LOL! It's a little embarassing as I'm pretty sure there is no kissing in soccer. Especially not right in the middle of the game.

He also hugs his coach and his teammates. I don't really see other boys hugging but my DS is a little luvy. Ha Ha!

I also have some really cute pictures of him in his soccer uniform. With the little ones, we just have to expose them to things and then see what they pick up on.

Love, Supergirl made it thru a game and that was it. She is now in tap and ballet (LOVE IT)!!!

My brother and his kids are the ones that taken the soccer bug for me. My neice and nephews are trying to get a league together for the school as it does not have one currently.

Bethany, going after the ball is very advanced in my mind!! And I have to say I was secretly "thrilled" (a bit) that she kept coming over to spend time with me!

Leigh, what school doesn't have soccer? Isn't that unamerican or something...haha!! I bet supergirl is a beautiful ballerina/tapper!

DD has been in soccer/baseball for about 6 months. It is indoor soccer. Just recently she was moved up an age level. So now she's with five 4 year old boys and a 5 year old girl. She LOVES it! Her class is not just soccer, though. They do half and hour of baseball and half an hour soccer. It is so fun to go to the practices! We, too, have the minor hugs interruptions, but we're good with that. :-) DD is fastest around the bases every practice - yes, they get timed and they keep score too. She doesn't score very often in soccer, but that's just fine as long as she's having fun, trying her best and being a good listener. Those are the goals coach talks about every week.
DD is about to fore-go soccer for a little while and try basketball. Mommy is a big basketball (GO CELTICS!) fan, so she sees basketball a lot and coach also encourages exploring lots of sports.
Anyway, we are totally digging the sports thing. DH and I were both athletes, so at least we know the rules of the games. We tried dance and she cried loudly the whole first class, so we didn't make her go back. I mean, geez, she's only 3.
