Out of the Blue 103 Fever? Advice Please!

E didn't appear sick. But he's been irritable for a couple of days and is teething really badly at the moment. Today DH (bless him for being observant!) said to me he looked bruised under his eye....when I undressed him for his bath i noticed he felt very hot. I rarely take his temp he's not a kid who runs high fever often. So anyway, yeah it's high 103 and I am not noticing any other symptoms.

Besides giving him Motrin, what should I look out for? I"m kind of upset, he JUST got over a huge ear infection and got a clean bill of health from GI doc and this just threw me. Can a kid get Coxsackie twice? That was the only time he ran a high fever before.

Poor E. Alot of times my kids would run temps when they were teething, but where he just got over an infetion that could be it. Short of having him check out again, if it were me I would just treat the temp and wait and see. Just be sure to alternate motrin and tylenol.

I will say that ear infections really bite and can come and reoccur, but if he isn't showing any other symptoms I would just closely monitor him.

EZ we have no tylenol, just motrin. Would you wake him to take his temp again? He's sleeping soundly at the moment. Had a teaspoon of Motrin at 6:30 (2 hours ago). Thanks for responding!

Stormster I just was tired and grumpy for a couple of days then Wednesday I got 103+ fever with motrin and tylenol. I had muscle pains but can a toddler really tell you he his muscles hurt. I dont know how verbal E is. I had that fever from about Wed. afternoon till Thurs morning. Now I have a runny nose its apparently a real interesting virus. I also dont have any hearing right now in my right ear. It burst last night in the middle of the night.

Thanks guys, he woke up and was inconsolable for about 1/2 hour or so. DH ran out for Tylenol and now he's laying down again (actually WANTED his crib) We were asking him to show us where he hurt but it did seem to just be an all over thing.

I can't wait until he can tell me!!! I did feel him passing a lot of gas when i was holding him and his tooth is bursting through. Who knows....? I'm sure it's nothing serious

Oh, poor E!
I would say just make sure his neck isn't stiff or painful when bent down (like nodding the head).

Storm, the first thought that came to mind when I read the title of your thread was ear infection. I think you need to call E's pediatrician -- he may need another round of antibiotics. I've been prone to ear infections my entire life, and high fevers often are the first symptom I show, even before the ear pain kicks in. There have been times I've taken a round of antibiotics, thought the infection had cleared up, only to discover it raging again within a week or two. Usually the second round of antibiotics (a different one than the first round) does the trick.

We are living proof that Coxsackie can visit more than once. This last time DD didn't really have legions on the palms of her hands, but she definitely had them in her mouth and the bottoms of her feet. She was at 103 as well.
Having said that, I'm always pretty excitable about big fevers. Now that DD can just plain tell us what hurts it isn't so bad, but still..... Do you have the kind of Ped that you can call?

Just got back from doc, it is the ear infection lingering, in one ear. So now he's on his third almost consecutive anti-biotic. We are holding off on the ENT specialist because the last two rounds were not Augementin which is what usually works for him (doc wanted to see if other drugs would work but I guess they didn't).

I kind of figured it out when i noticed something in his ear in the parking lot (I really need better light in this house!) because I won't gross you out with details but it was fairly huge.

Also doc said spring around the corner so ear infections tend to improve anyway. Thanks for help. Going out now to get meds. Thank goodness he's been on Culturelle and will likely be for a long time.
