A dip in the pool (or, my daughter is officially Jewish!)
Just wanted to share - last week Anabel had her official conversion to Judaism!
My husband and I are kind of ambivalently Jewish - not particularly believing or observant. But somehow Anabel has been drawn to Judaism from day one. She loves the songs and the rituals. She loves going to synagogue. It's a big part of her life. So we felt it was important that we get her formerly converted. We went with some immediate family and 4 rabbis to a Mikvah, which is a kind of ritual bath. They said some prayers, she had a dunk (has to be fully immersed, not a dry spot or hair) and Voila - Jewish! I was worried that she wouldn't want to go under the water on command, but she LOVED it and in fact didn't want to leave! We're going to have a naming too, sometime in the next few weeks - kind of a follow-up ceremony when she'll get a Hebrew name. I've been thinking about how many names she has - she's got the name her birthmother gave her, the name we gave her (which incorporates part but not all of her original name), and now a new Jewish name. Sometimes it seems like a lot of names for such little shoulders to carry. But I hope as she grows up she'll see it as a blessing, and realize each of her names is a tie to a community of people that greatly love her. I've attached a couple of photos (I look terrible, but she looks great!)

Her Hebrew name will be Aviva Malka. We like Aviva for a few reasons: her first two initials are A.V., she was born in the spring (Aviva means spring in Hebrew), and we like the image of renewal. Malka - well, one of her birthmother's given names is Reina. Reina means queen in Spanish and and Malka means queen in Hebrew. We were looking to find a way to honor her birthmother in her name, and that seems to be a nice way to do it.
