OT: The Stimulus package

just wondering peoples thoughts on the new $790 BILLION stimulus package. does anyone think this is actually going to work? What i want to know is what it all entales. Is there going to be a stimulus check like we received back in may 2008??? i had heard this was part of the pkg but now have not heard anything lately on this. Does anyone know??

I personally think that something should be done, but spending this amount of $$$ and being "IN DEBT" to countries like China, cant be good for the U.S. i think its going to create alot more problems in the future. and i think all them banks that gave mortgages to people who couldnt afford it should just go under and take that loss. As well as the people who bought houses knowing they couldnt pay their mortgage. well, then you suffer the consequences. just because the bank tells you, you can afford something doesnt mean you should buy it. YOU are responsible for figuring your budget and how much you make, and just a tip: You cant actually continue to spend more than you make. YOU CANT LIVE BEYOND YOUR MEANS and then expect to be rescued when you cant pay your mortgage and get foreclosed on.

Now i know that alot of the housing problems do stem from other issues and alot of people are just plain lossing their jobs and cant pay their mortgages. and that just totally sucks. As a tax payer i dont have a problem helping them. people cant help that they have lost their jobs and now find themselves in a bad situation. Why are we not helping the people who are unemployed instead of giving the money to the banks whom just spend it recklessly anyways.

Them darn BANKS that are planning over the top vacations for employess, thousands in bonuses, fancy jets are doing it off of our $$$. i work hard for my $$$ and they are throwing it away on vacations to hawaii or wherever and i've only left the state of Wisconsin 3 times in my life!! ridiculos.

Well, thats my take on life right now, anyone else want to join in the rant??? Just my opinion of course, i'm sure some dont agree with me. Thanks, Rachel

Well, I don't know about the stimulus package...

Hope springs eternal, right?

As for the stimulus, unless I'm misunderstanding, we aren't going to be receiving another check...

I believe we are supposed to see it in our paychecks...

ETA: Starting around June, people should be receiving an additional $13 per week in their take home pay - basically $400 per year for singles and $800 for couples.

Makes me wonder how they "figure" this to be. I work 1 day a week...So does this mean I'll see that $13 in my paycheck? hmmm...

is this $13 a week before or after taxes...which democrats like to raise BTW.

if you want to stimulate the economy, give the money right back to the people you took it from so that they can pay their bills, buy their own food, and save up for college for their kids.

the 1st package going to banks who found themselves in the mess they were b/c they misbehaved, that makes me angry. did you see how one bank handed out $4 billion in bonuses right before declaring bankruptcy, Bank of America steps in and takes over and now the stimulus money Bank of America received is having to pay off the debts of that bank...the bank that just handed out $4 billion in bonuses.

But, saving for college won't stimulate the economy. The thought process behind not just giving every American $5,000 or whatever is that they may hoard it and not spend it. Honestly, if the government gave me a large amount of money, it's going under the mattress until I know we are out of this mess. Most people would uness they have to pay bills and paying cc bills won't stimulate the economy either. Goods and services have to be purchased in order to get the economy moving again. I hope it helps, but I am so not optomistic. We are small business owners and the economy directly affects our income. We are really starting to feel it. I hope this ends soon. I don't think that $13 dollars a week burning a hole in everyones' pocket is going to be enough to bring America back to its feet

Leave it to a bunch of men to think that stimulating something means getting it done as fast as possible with a bunch of nonsense somewhere in the middle of the process that does nothing for anyone on the recieving end.

I take my politics with a pinch of humor now....it's the only way I'll survive at this point!!

Binky, now THAT made me laugh!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!

On the serious side, though, I think these big bank executives need to STIMULATE themselves by giving back at least half of their multi-million dollar paychecks, sell a vacation home or two and buy a "normal" car, pay less for a suit, etc. I'm sick of the big boys thinking it's about themselves when the rest of us try to eek out a living. Geesh!!!!!!!!!

It's too exhausting for me to even try to wrap my brain around all of this...

I just wonder what these executives "think", ya know?

Is there ever a twinge of guilt? Do they ever feel guilty hopping on a plane to their sunny vacations/spas with this money that was supposed to "bail" these corporations out?

Does it even affect them to know that while people are losing their jobs, their homes, their livelihood, they are collecting million dollar bonus's?

I have to imagine that theres a conscience somewhere in there.

And that's not a criticism...It's not me thinking they should live lives of poverty because others struggle...I simply wonder...

Between the bailouts and the stimulus packages, each American now has about $17,000 of national debt that we will have to pay off in the form of taxes. They could have saved a LOT of money by just giving each of us $10,000 to pay on mortgages, buy cars, electronics, food , household goods, etc. We would have bailed out ourselves. Americans would not have hoarded the money.

If the government would just pay one month's mortgage for each family, I'm guessing that would make a big difference to each of us. A few dollars each paycheck will do nothing.

Well, even though it may not seem like much, if our paychecks are $13 more each week ($26 total), that $100 per month would help US out...

We are not only paying our own bills, but paying my MIL's utilities and health/life insurance...

So for us, any little bit helps...

I think the thought is that if we get $13 a month, we will spend it on coffees or going out to eat or a new shirt or whatever, but if we got a big chunk of money
($600 or whatever) we would use it to pay off a credit card or other debt and that would be less stimulating to the economy.

Actually, 50 dollars a month is about half of my grocery bill, that does help me. Every little bit helps me. Or it would help pay for a prescription. Or part of a student loan payment, heck it is a quarter of my house payment.

The thing is, Americans always want a quick fix for problems. There isn't one for this. It is like weight loss, how long did it take you to put those pounds on? It isn't going to comeo off in a month.

Wow, $13 a week! That won't even pay for a manicure. lol Oh well, I guess something is better than nothing. You know, why didn't they just take the money and split it up equally between everyone in the US? I'm sure many people on these boards could have used that money towards adoption costs. I know I could have!

Hmmm Maybe if they let the banks fail there would be NO ONE to pay our house payment to.

I also worry about borrowing more money from China. Then we would owe them money, and buy their goods with the money we borrow! China is being stimulated more than we are!

Maybe if they gave the bail out money to the citizens WE could stimulate the economy! If we each got a 150,000.00 we could do a little spending and save our own mortgages/credit. Even those who would go to Vegas and blow the money would be stimulating the economy. Don't give it to the crooks who robbed us in the first place.
