OT: Toddler Asthma Issues

My adopted DS has Asthma, has had it since he was a few months old. Instead of it getting better it appears to be getting worse, and way worse at night. He takes daily nebulizer treatments, and has emergency inhalers but hates them.

Last night we had a very bad night, at around midnight he started his attack that went down hill and he couldn' breath.

My husband who I had kicked out of my room was sleeping in Ds room because they both snore! So I decided to let him handle things until I could hear they went south very fast.

My husband I both feel very bad for DS, and he is young and hard to explain that if he just takes a few puffs in he will be better (we hope) It was a scary night, almost a trip to the ER.

I am wondering if anyone else has any good ways to get the emergency inhaler in him? Also, I had Asthma and once we moved to Tampa, I no longer neede d any meds unless I am very sick. I thought DS would better but he appears to be unchanged. We had MOLD issues in Palm Beach, as many of you remember. Also if any of you have a med that works well for you, I am all ears to talk with doctor about it! Last night was bad for all of us, but I feel very bad for my DS!

God Bless,
Summer

Oh no, that is very scary. Sorry to hear your boy is going through this. I have had asthma since I was a teen and know exactly what those episodes are like. Not fun, and means the asthma is not under control right now

I assume your son's emergency inhaler is some type of Albuterol? If it's hard for your son to use, I think you can get that drug prescribed in nebulized (liquid) form. Something to look into?

Also is your son old enough to take Singulair and/or Advair? Sometimes you just need to tweak the cocktail of drugs to find the combo that works.

Sending hugs to you - please let us know what the Dr says, if you talk to him/her.

Wish I could help. DS has some respiratory issues and I know how scary is it when they are struggling to breathe! I just wanted to offer my support and wish you good luck in managing his asthma!

Asthma can be quite scary. Hope your little guy is better soon.

My oldest has asthma, but rarely has an attack...usually only if he has a really bad chest infection. His birthmom has it as well.

When he was younger, he was on puffers, and one of the worst reactions I've ever seen was when he was on the steroid puffer called Flovent. I've never, ever seen a child more hyper as when he was on that.

The doc thought it might have been the Ventolin, but I knew it wasn't. His pediatrician ended up putting him on Sinulair...one pill, once a day, and I have to say, it was like a miracle.

He is 11 now, and I don't think he has taken anything in about 3 years.

One other thing we used was use a cool mist machine in his bedroom.

Thank you!

Sinulair...one pill, once a day, and I have to say, it was like a miracle.

That is what I would like to try him on...I hear that works really well. Thank you for the thoughts and I ideas.

Keep them coming!

God Bless,
Summer

Yep, Singulair worked wonders for us too - taken before bedtime.

My daughter has some pretty complex heart/lung issues and has "asthma symptoms". She takes flovent daily (has for years). Thankfully it doesn't effect her negatively. She just started on singulair.

For emergency use we have done both albuterol and Xoponex (I know I spelled that wrong) either w/ inhaler or through the nebulizer. I much prefer using the nebulzier (unless we are out, then I just keep the "puffies" as she calls them in my purse). Also for her xoponex works better than albuterol.

I might reccommend taking him to a pediatric pulmonolgist (if you don't already) since his ashtma is that severe that it's keeping y'all up at night. We have seen one in the past but I didn't like the office staff very much so our ped has been managing the asthma symptoms. She just recently reffered us to an allergist who specializes in asthma (we see him next month).

I hope you are able to find something that helps your son!

Sorry to hear about this terrible, scary experience....Hope he is better now? My son has some mild food allergies...Sometimes after eating wheat or dairy he will caugh a bit. Have you had the allergy tests. My son also has bad reaction on molds and doghair and dust! He is on Zyrtec and Nasonex and Singulair daily...It works well...He just sometimes becomes very tired and caughs a bit after running or laughing, never needed puffs. You do get Ventolin syrup....In winter with bronchitis we use Nebuliser with steroids. If I were you, don't know what precaution you already take....I will first start with all the anti dustmite things, like cussion covers, ext. The singulair decreases the mucus production alot! But I'm worried that this is the cause for his emotional outbursts! Good luck, let us know pleas. Oh, ps....Taking swimming lessons, also helped alot!

Heart

I second Suz's pedi pulmonologist suggestion. My son also has many respiratory issues (chronic lung disease, tracheomalacia, paralyzed vocal cord) and they've been very helpful.

Singulair worked great for my older son when he was little; now he is on Advair and it has worked well too. But my son has the coughing kind of asthma, not the wheezing kind.

Hope your LO feels better soon!

Blessings, Michelle
