Seriously? I have to say, you had probably better not take your child anywhere in that case. Plenty of responsible parents are making alternative vaccine choices. And if your kid has health problems, you had better keep them away from anyone vaccinated in the last month, because live vaccines can shed and cause illness. I am also curious as to how anyone knows that something they got who knows where came from someone that wasn't vaccinated? Do you honestly believe that it couldn't have come from someone that was vaccinated?? If so, then surely you believe your vaccinated kid is completely safe.

Yes, seriously. I'm doing in my mind what is the responsible and right thing for my child. No, we barely go anywhere and yes, he's kept away from other children. I don't have the luxury of taking the risk and exposing my son to children who aren't vaccinated. And to me, it is a huge risk.

Yeah, I have to agree with Devildogwife on this one.
We have to make choices everyday, not always easy ones, to protect our children. If you read that article that I posted, just one of many out there, it talks about how many diseases are spread and they can normally figure out where it has come from. MOST of the time it is from unvaccinated individuals, adults or children. These diseases that are being spread around can be life threatening. It really is very scary, and a lot of people are really scared with what is going to happen if people don't start getting their children vaccinated. Again, people who are vaccinated can still have risks (like I said before, nothing is 100%) but I think its something like 95% protected for the most part when you are vaccinated. Its not 100% but better than 40 or 50% or worse yet 0%. That's why my daughter will be enrolled in a private school/daycare that requires all children to be vaccinated. We are very serious about it; something we will not back down from. I have heard too many horror stories from these serious diseases like measles for example, especially involving young children.

That doesn't make parents that make a different choice irresponsible. If you really don't take your child to the store, or church or anywhere, then I can understand not wanting them to play with unvaccinated kids, if you have an issue with that. However, most people take their kids around people with an unknown vax status, yet they are going to flip if they know a kid is unvaccinated? And I generally wouldn't take my kid to play with anyone that was sick...irregardless of their vaccine status. I have a few exceptions to that, but understand some people have no exceptions to that.

There are very real risks to getting vaccinated too. Studies are subjective and can be made to look either way...there are planty of studies to support those that don't vaccinate too. Then there are people in the middle that only vaccinate against certain things...it is all something parents must weigh, but unless your child lives in a bubble, they are going to be exposed to people who make other choices. I don't condemn people whether they choose to vaccinate or not. I have a big problem with the pro-vaccine movement condemn and calling irresponsible the informed parents that make a different choice.

I don't want to speak for DDW, but she didn't say non vaxing is irresponsible...She said that due to her son's sensitive health, she had to be responsible for HIM...
In fact, in her first post, she said that if she had a healthy child she may feel different. ![]() |

Where on this thread did anyone say a different choice was irresponsible? I certainly didn't say it, and I can't find where anyone else did. What I pesonally said was that I am making the responsible choice for my son. ETA-lovemy2boys, you and I posted at the same time. Thanks. ![]()

Okay...
Again, I never said there weren't risks in getting vaccines. Of course there are...there are risks with everything. Getting in the car driving to work...there are risks! But honestly, there are WAY MORE risks not getting your child vaccinated then the risks of getting your child vaccinated. That is not my personal optinion that is a fact that most doctors would tell you. As for me; I never said it was irresponsible or bad parenting, but I do wonder how one can outway the risks of not vaccinating versus protecting your child against life threatening illnesses. And yes, that is my personal opinion. No one else has to agree with it! ![]()

When I first saw this thread I knew it would turn into who's a better parent than who.
We are ALL doing what's best for OUR children by vaxing or choosing not too. It's a personal choice period.

I am going to post this one more time and then "try" to be done with it.
I know you are not saying this Supa....but I certainly hope this thread didn't/isn't going to turn into "who is better" that certainly isn't where this discussion should be going. I think we are all just trying to learn from each other and hear everyone's thoughts and OPINIONS. That's what all of this is on every single post...our thoughts and opinions. I know for me, I am always interested in learning new risks, new developments with the medical world. Really, I am just curious what the reasons are when people don't vaccinate. Truly just curious... I am in no place to say that I am better than anyone. I definitely don't think that I am....curious, yes that I am. ![]() So, anyway, this needs to get back on a different level, but I really don't think this is a "who is better" type conversation. We are all learning and trying to educate ourselves. Again, I think everyone knows where I stand on the situation. What other people do, is their own business, but what I think some of us were trying to say, and maybe didn't say it to well. Is what other people do, regarding vaccines, can affect other people and other people's children. So I do see why so many people are concerned, me included. That's why it always get into such a heated topic. It truly is something that we should all be concerned with....IMHO.

We go to a family practitioner. When we took W to his first well baby visit the Doc vaccinated DH and I against whooping cough. We already had our flu shots this year. Doc was afraid DH or I would be exposed to whooping cough through work and give it to W. W doesn't get his first round of shots until February. Our Doc gives vacs on the traditional schedule but said he would break them up and/or delay them if W has any problems with them or we aren't comfortable with the traditional schedule. We have a friend who has a son 2 months older than ours. They refuse to bring their boy to our house because W has not been vaccinated yet. On the other hand, I have taken W shopping, out to eat, he has visited several ERs where I have friends (I am a paramedic). He has never had a sniffle. Storm, I know you will make the best decision for E.

Right here it is stated that it is irresponsible. Religious objections are ok but others aren't?

Private schools are subject to the same laws as public schools. A school that does not allow a child who has not been immunized would be breaking some series anti-descriminatory laws (as most families who do not immunize cite religious or ethical concerns) and would leave themselves vulnerable to a serious lawsuit. I think that it would be hard to find a public or private school that would openly admit to the practice of only allowing students who are immunized. And if you did, they would be breaking federal laws. |
