Gliders
Hi,
I'm inducing lactation and plan to breastfeed our adopted newborn. We are thinking about getting a glider--the big, comfy, upholstered type--for the nursery for those long hours of feeding and pumping. Anyone have one or can recommend a good brand? We are willing to pay a little more for quality and durability since we plan on getting a neutral color so we can use it in the livingroom later. What I don't want to do is pay too much for one that's not well made or is uncomfortable... Thanks!

Dutailier is a great brand - I don't remember the model name we have, though. We went to a store where they had a lot of gliders of different brands and just sat on a whole bunch!
I'll add too, that we didn't breast feed and we STILL consider the glider chair to be one of the best purchases we ever made!

I found that the good ones, the really solid ones are in the 600 and up range. At least the upholstered ones are. We have a DeMare Glider and it's good but not GREAT and I think the brand is good but the one we have is their lower end model and we had a 250 pound + nurse and it was really not able to accommodate her. The chair never really recovered.
I LOVE if you can afford it and have the space the ones that are oversized so when the child is bigger he can sit next to you. I also got a neutral color and kind of regret that too because it looks almost too grown up in his room. I would have gotten a red one in a better model if I could do it again. I just throw a colorful blanket over it to make it look more part of a child's room. Good luck! So exciting!

Thanks for the suggestions!
Our nursery isn't really "cute" in that nursery sort of way...it's a lovely room and I enjoy being there, but we aren't really decorators and nothing "matches". There is a bright colored rug, an oak crib my dad made, an antique rocker. So neutral will be fine in there (although I love red and we have red accents all over the house). We figure we can go all out on a kid-theme decorated room when they are old enough to appreciate it. My friend has a glider and it's my favorite chair in her house. We'll keep looking. I think I'll go sit in a few today. ![]()

Let us know how it goes! Are you going to get an Ottoman? I highly suggest it
![]() I spent many a 3am feeding in that thing and it does become something of a haven, so I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately our now 17 month old doesn't sit still for story time but we do try to take him in our laps every evening and read. Hoping when he's a little bit older he'll enjoy a cuddle and a book.

Definitely. I found a nice glider (Newco brand) on Costco.com with an ottoman, in flax or sage color, delivery included, for $599. The nicer ones I've seen online are all in that price range, but just for the chair without delivery or ottoman.

Yup, right now our glider is all about reading books before naps and bedtime - probably started when she was about 2. It's still probably my favorite chair in the house! We didn't get the ottoman though - her room is too small. Oh well.

We have TWO Dutailiers and they are wonderfully comfortable. I'd definitely recommend an ottoman as well, much more comfortable in the middle of the night for tired mommies (and daddies when the bottle's happening). Our first Dutalier is more than 10 years old and still looks like new -- a light dotted design; you can get it cleaned just like any other furniture and it stays perf. They come with ALL sorts of fabric and although this brand isn't cheap, they last forever and are great pieces of furniture "later". Most guest fight over who gets the rocker, ha. After our first, I lucked into a second on ebay for 1/5 the price of our first; this one is upholstered in a tone on tone (beige on beige) damask that went so well in our baby dd's room. Love this brand and highly recommend. susan

We bought a dutaliet with ottoman when our first was born and it was a great investment. I only BF for a month, but we used it all the time for feeding. We considered moving it to our daughter's wroom when she was born, but we still use it for our 5-year-old!
I recommend the one with padded armrests, swivel, and reclining. The reclining was terrific during those 3am feeding when you can't kep your eyes open. Also, if you have cats make sure it's a fabric they won't like. Our cats destroyed our glider and even though it's still functional it's a real mess. Good luck, |

I second the Dutailier. We chose one that reclined with an ottoman. I love the recline. I do wish we had gotten one with a taller back though. You get to pick your fabric and wood color too. We went to a local store to test them out and then bought one online for a couple hundred dollars less than the store charged. This is the site we bought ours from Dutailier Glider Rockers and Ottomans at BabyCatalog.com
They gave me great customer service too. One of the snaps on the arm rest pad broke when I was putting it together and they shipped a new set of arm pads to me. After using it a few months the metal stop for the recline started making a creaking noise in the upright position and they sent me a whole new frame and paid return shipping on the old frame. I was really suprised that they gave me no grief at all with this, just did it. Now I guess you could say you shouldn't have these kinds of issues when you spend 700.00 on a chair but I'm happy to know they stand behind their product. We also plan on using this chair for a very long time, which is why we spent so much. |
