I haven't caved on the pierced ears. I am given a hard time from friends and day care workers that my daughter is 4 and no pierced ears yet. My daughter asks for it about once a week (along with tattoos) and the answer is always no. She needs to be old enough to care for them herself. The current goal is 10 years old. I got mine at 10 -- didn't take care of them -- and had to get them repierced at 14.
