Anyone care to guess?
OK, here is the situation. Our emom is due on December 30. She just went to the doctor this morning and found out that the baby weighs 8 1/2 pounds already! She is afraid of delivering a 10 pound baby. She is supposed to go back to the doctor on Wednesday to talk about inducing her labor. What do you think the doctor will do? Will they induce on Wednesday? Friday? or next week? I realize this is all just speculation. Thanks for helping an anxious "almost, maybe" momma.

I hate to second guess the Drs- We went through this with DS. We thought they were going to induce early and they decided to wait. DS arrived 5 days later.
Just want you to know I am thinking of you and emom. Keep us posted.

Glad to hear emom and the baby are doing well and healthy. In my experience with being overdue and other issues... Ultrasounds are really not very accurate with weight this far along in a pregnancy. I think as long as emom's health is not at risk, they'll let her go a bit longer. If the baby does end up being larger than average, she may end up with a c-section. Its funny, some doctors are super conservative and afraid of getting sued and will avoid it at all costs. And others are more of a let nature take its course variety. If her blood pressure is at all having issues, if the baby is less active, or if she's even remotely unsure of a conception date--then bet on an induction. Hang in there!

Thanks for responding!
With our first adoption we did not have all this waiting. Our son was already born when we got the call that we were matched. I have loved getting to know our emom, but this is so stressful. Lisa |

They induced my sister 3 weeks early, as soon as the baby measured 8 lbs on the ultrasound. She is diabetic and very very small frame, and had started to have some other issues so this may all have contributed to them delivering early (by c-sec), they estimated the baby to be just over 8lbs based on the ultrasound but he was actually over 9 lbs when born.

i think that the doctors might just induce her after christmas or maybe before. the estimates arent always very accurate either. they told mysister that her baby was going to be 9 lbs or larger and she was overdue so they induced her and then she had problems and they had to do a c-section and he was 6lbs 5oz. they were way off. i had my son 15 days late and he was 8lbs8oz and they told me he was going to be small. well i can tell you.. he WAS NOT small. just be patient, my mother always said, when the baby is ready to come out it will. let nature work its magic. unless of course something is wrong with mother or child, then that's different. Hang in there. Rach

My guess is that they will induce either Wed night or Friday morning.

I agree with the others about ultrasounds not being the most accurate predictor of weights. Also, when I was still in residency, and delivering a lot of babies, we rarely induced before 40 weeks. Our hospital was very busy, and it practically took an act of Congress to schedule an induction. There had to be a VERY good reason, since inductions are not without risk.
Since the emom is due next week (and this is a holiday week), they might just let her go to her due date, but then again, they might be overcome with the spirit of Christmas, and help her out. Good luck!

Honestly, I hope that they wait until after the holidays. I think it would be extremely difficult to place a child on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Thanks all, for your opinions. She is supposed to go to the doctor tomorrow to discuss her options. I'll let you know how it goes. Lisa
