To be honest that's the only thing he asked for besides BC. He asked if I had immunization records to show his age.

I'm about to go do all this on Wednesday, not looking forward to it.

Now one thing is when I helped Bmom fill out the original BC we checked the box to issue a ss#, so does that mean they will just have to look hers up? Bmom and my DH went down and tried to get it before our taxes because we did not know about an ATIN and they said they would not release it to bmom, she never even mentioned adoption just said she needed to find out about her daughters ss#.

Thanks Supa.

I'll just bring it along. I don't want to get there and be told I need something else. The last thing I want to do is have to go back there. LOL.

My visit to the Social Security office was a piece of cake thanks to the great advice here and from our lawyer's office. It took 10 minutes- I had to show Final Adoption Decree, new birth certificate and my driver's license. I had DS immunization record just in case. The gentleman that assisted me was very kind. I had such a HUGE sense of relief as I walked out of that office

Thanks everyone for the advice. I hope others will have as easy of time as I did.

We did ours today and it was super easy. The guy that was doing mine said his wife wants to adopt but he does not. Said he did not feel he could love the child and it was to much and that one day the kid would throw back in his face that he was not the "real dad" we talked a bit, it was actually a nice talk and able to educate a little.

It was simple, he only wanted the final decree and my ID. I gave him the new BC too just because that way I did not have to try and keep spelling her name.

The drunk and high woman in the lobby was entertaining

Wow that was fast! How exciting.

Being done is the best feeling. I loved when I could stop worrying about all the adoption stuff and just focus on the heart stuff. One less stressor.

Bump!

Does anyone know if we have to have the amended birth certificate to apply for a SSN for our DD? We have the original, which has her name exactly as it is now, and her bmother's name (bfather is not on the OBC). Getting the amended BC will take a while, and I'm hoping to file my taxes in the next month and claim the adoption credit. I don't know if we'll receive the amended BC before April 15th (long, discriminatory story). The SS website states that we need proof of citizenship, among other things - will the OBC be acceptable??

We were told specifically that you DO NOT need the amended birth certificate. But we were also told that they will ask for it and we should ask to speak to a supervisor if we are told that they can't issue a new SS# without one.

We will have our son's adoption decree, but it takes 15 MONTHS to get an amended birth certificate in our state. And we need to get a SS# quickly for David so that Elizabeth can add him to her health insurance. We were told that they may give us a hard time because this is not done often enough for everyone to be completely familiar with what is and is not absolutely required. But we CAN get a SS# just with the adoption decree, original birth certificate and immunization records.

We were told this by David's adoption social worker, who apparently has helped people deal with this a number of times since it takes so long to get the amended BC.

Didn't really want to start a new thread but it's been almost a month and we still haven't received the card. I know they had to get proof from the "issuer" that everything is legit. and that every state does this but isn't a month a long time? Do you think it is because of the holidays?

It's certainly possible. It seems like all government run services grind to a halt around the holidays. But I would probably call just to check.
