OT: NYC Ideas - with a 3 year old

DH, DD and I are taking an impromtu trip to new york city tomorrow. we have been there a lot, but never with our DD (who is now 3.5). I want to take her to see the tree at rockefeller center...is that better to do at night? what other fun kiddie things can you recommend in the city (we are staying with hubby's friend on the upper east side, if that helps). TIA!!!

Take her to The Metropolitan Museum of Art it's on the upper eastside, another great place is the Children's Museum. It's on the upper westside but you can take a short taxi ride there.

Enjoy!!

You may not want to consider this but since you will be so close... American Grl Place is right around the corner from Rockefeller Center. We have 4 girls and even a 3.5 might enjoy window shopping there (HA!) for alittle bit - especially the Bitty Baby section.
Have a great time!

Well you could visit me!

I think you can do the tree in Rockefeller Center any time of day - when I was a kid we always went during the day and it was still impressive. Of course it's more crowded during the day as well, but it's colder at night so they kind of cancel each other out. I don't know the hours of the skating rink, if you're interested.

Some great stuff for kids:

The Museum of Natural History was my favorite place growing up: American Museum of Natural History

The holiday Christmas windows - this site has a good description: Traditional NYC Department Store Holiday Windows 2008 | Mommy Poppins - Get more out of NYC with kids

Central Park is always wonderful. The Central Park Zoo isn't far from where you'll be and it's great for young kids. The Bronx zoo is bigger and more of a trek from where you'll be, but it's wonderful and I think they've started their holiday lights display (though maybe that's just at night).

Lots of people I know recommend the big Toys r Us in Times Square with the big ferris wheel, but it hasn't worked for us with DD - too long to wait and too much potential commodity consumption.

That's what comes to mind first - I'll see what else I can think of.

all great ideas and I would def. throw in FAO Schwartz and maybe a walk in the Time Warner Center if the weather isn't great.

Have fun!

Thank you, ladies!!! I am scared of American Girls (haaha!)...I would never get out of their alive! (Or TRU...someone else recommended that to me!).

Maybe I could "sneak" into FAO for a bit...we don't have one in Boston anymore and I love it!

I love the idea of the CP Zoo...never been there myself!! The Children's Museum sounds fun too!!

I am excited! Thanks again!

Saya, I think you live in Brooklyn? We are hooking up with one of my best friends who lives there (I should introduce you...she's the bomb!), but I think we are meeting in the city. I think DD is definitely a "Brooklyn" type o kiddo!
